Helen Stanley
Instant Stream, walnut ink painting on handmade paper, desert landscape, brown

About the Item

Instant Stream, walnut ink painting on handmade paper, desert landscape, brown Helen Stanley’s sculptural paintings are beautifully drawn, realistically rendered portrayals of daily life—bowls, baskets, dishes, sticks, and windows. But a closer inspection reveals much more than initially meets the eye. Perched there in front of you, her wall-mounted sculptures exude a quality at odds with the normalcy of that first impression. There’s an edgy, sometimes deliciously menacing sense that makes viewer stop in their tracks. My pieces do have sort of a slow draw. I like to bring people in gradually and then…” And then surprise them. Jostle them a bit. Many of Stanley’s acrylic and oil sculptural pieces feature vessels of different types. “They’re attractive to me, partially because they’ve always been associated with the feminine. They represent a thoughtful place, a protective womb where creation takes place and growth occurs.” They hold water and they hold food.

  • Golden City - 24k Gold and Mineral, Cityscape, Luxurious, Big Painting, Gemstone
    By Maria Mitsumori
    Located in Tokyo, JP
This large painting is Mitsumori's very first maiden work. An original mineral painting, made with 24k gold, crushed minerals (natural and synthetic), oyster shells and gold-coated mica on Japanese paper mounted on a wood panel. Natural colors include precious and semi-precious stones. Because these substances consist of unique chemical and physical properties, every artwork has unique characteristics and a story to tell, with a sense of connection to the earth. It is highly textured with a matt and rich sand-like appearance. What originally inspired her to paint was the cityscapes of Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is a city in India known as the “golden city” that gleams in gold-like colors at sunset. The city shimmered like a piece of gold jewelry, reminding her of jewelry that retains its shine even after a thousand years. She felt a strong desire to capture them in paintings and set out to do so. Presents the sceneries seen through her eyes in an art form. In mint condition, Certificate of Authenticity included and calligraphy seal in front, hand-signed at the back. Sold unframed and ready to hang (eye bolt and string mounted at the back).
