About

Wonderful tonalist Connecticut landscape featuring white pines and stream in the style of Charles Warren Eaton (American, 1857-1937). Signed and dated "H.P. Piper 1904". Condition: Excellent; recently cleaned and varnished. Image size: 18"H x 24"W. Presented in rustic giltwood toned wood frame. Framed size: 20"H x 26"W. The Tonalism, a distinctive style of low-toned atmospheric landscape painting, developed a sizable following among American artists in the 1880s. This new generation of tonalist artists, most born after 1845, and many foreign trained in Paris and Munich, broke with the prevailing school of Hudson River artists and their large detailed panoramic views of the American scenes. Many streams of influences fed into the growing taste for a more intimate, poetic, and expressive style of landscape art, relying on soft-edged broadly painted tonalities to communicate emotion. About 1900, Charles Eaton discovered the white pine forests of Connecticut, near his summer haunt of Thompson. For the ten years that followed, he made the white pine tree motif his primary subject; depicting it in oil paintings, watercolors, monotypes, and pastels. He became so famous for it that he was often called "The Pine Tree Painter." These works soon secured his reputation as one of the country's leading landscape painters and nearly all of the paintings that entered public collections during his lifetime represented a variation on the pine tree theme.
