Signed lower right, 'Dusso' for Leon D'Usseau, Jr. (American, 1918-1991) and painted circa 1965. A substantial, Modernist oil showing a mare and foal frolicking in a deep chestnut landscape interspersed with foliage and areas of bright color. Born in Los Angeles, Leon D'Usseau began training under the guidance of his father, who was among the earliest fine-art film directors to work in Hollywood. At the age of twelve, Leon was drawing seriously and, at fifteen, received a working scholarship at Chouinard School of Art where he studied under Merrill Gage and Alexander Archipenko. At this early age, he was also employed by Chouinard to teach a line-drawing class. Adopting the anglicized brush-name of Dusso, he exhibited widely and with success including at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1937-40), the California Palace Legion of Honor (1941), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1942), the Laguna Festival of Arts, Los Angeles Artists Association (1945), the California Watercolor Society (1946) and the Audubon Association (1945). Chinese School, 20th century; After Ren Renfa (Qinglongzhen, 1255-1328). Signed center right in Chinese with artist chop mark for 'Yueshan Daoren' 月山道人, brush name for Ren Renfa. (Qinglongzhen [now Qingpu, Songjiang, Shanghai Municipality], b.1255; d. 1328). Chinese painter. Under the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368) he became an official, rising to the level of Vice-President of the River Conservation Bureau. He was famous for his paintings of horses, which were much admired by both his Mongol and Chinese patrons. In horse painting he followed in the tradition of the Song-period (960–1279) artist Li Gonglin, which was characterized by use of the ‘iron-wire’ line and a minimum of shading. Ultimately, however, Ren’s style can be traced to the Tang (ad 618–907) painters Yan Liben and Han Gan. Ren’s earliest surviving painting is dated 1280, indicating that he was a mature artist by his mid-twenties. Signed lower right, 'Anton Sipos' (Bosnian-American, born 1938) and dated 1974. A very substantial Impressionist oil painting showing a view of two young women relaxing in a sunny garden with a peacock and a peahen. Born in Bosnia, Anton Sipos began drawing at an early age and left home in his teens to work as a film animation artist. He achieved immediate success with his first work, "Surrogate", which won an Academy Award for best-animated short subject under the direction of Yugoslav animator Dushon VuKotic. In 1964, Sipos moved to Montmartre to study at the École de Paris. During this early period, Sipos exhibited widely and with success including at the Salon d'Automne and Le Salon d'Artistes Françaises. While in France, he made numerous painting trips to Provence, Giverny, Rouen and the Cote d'Azur as well as to Italy. In 1970, Sipos arrived in California where he painted landscapes of Los Angeles and marine scenes of the harbor in San Diego. V....Vaughan painted each of these on location "en plein air" It has an Impressionistic Style as seen in many of Virginia Vaughan's paintings. This was taken from a plein aire painting near the castle where V....Vaughan was giving a workshop in 2022. 18 x 22 framed. V....Vaughan is know for her animal, Texas missions Italy, France and Gulf Coast paintings. . Also shown in photos are other paintings by in the "Small Works" collection. Photos were taken to show the detail of each painting. Her paintings are part of the permanent collection of the Gadsen Museum of Art, the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art and the Great Plains Art Museum as well as in countless private collections. In the fall 2023 she will teach a workshop at a castle in France, where artists will stay and enjoy the southern French food and scenes. As a child, she exhibited a love of making art and played the role of the creative one among the seven children in her family, eventually working for several of her siblings as a sign painter and designer. Her parents forever encouraged her to appreciate and mine her passion, instilling in her that it was not simply a passing fancy, but an innate gift. “It was always conveyed to me that this was a God-given talent,” she says. Somehow that made me feel like it was something I was supposed to do. It gave me permission to pursue it. Vaughan attended college on an athletic scholarship, though she filled her schedule with art classes and subsequently secured an internship at an advertising agency.
