'Cana Island Lighthouse' original painting signed by Gregory Steele, purple

About the Item

'Cana Island Lighthouse' is an original landscape painting signed by American artist Gregory Steele. In the painting, Steele presents a picturesque view of the Door County, Wisconsin lighthouse on Cana Island – near Spikehorn Bay and Moonlight Bay. As with many of the landscape painters of the nineteenth century, Steele shows the meeting of human industry with the overwhelming force of nature. The lighthouse towers and glows in the left of the image, hidden behind trees green with summer. In the distance, dramatic clouds reflect the purples, pinks and violets of an oncoming sunset storm, dominating the composition and emphasizing the smallness of mankind's efforts. Once nighttime falls, the lighthouse will glow even brighter, fulfilling its indented function of warning of the rocky shore in the dark storm. oil on board 16 x 24 inches, board 22 x 30 inches, frame Signed lower left Framed to conservation standards in a gold finish cassetta-style wood moulding Gregory Steele was born and raised in a small western Illinois town twelve miles from the Mississippi river. Since 1969, he has lived in Davenport, Iowa in view of the river. Both the River and the surrounding landscape has been a big influence on his art. At the age of 18, Steele became a professional artist as a cartoonist selling works to newspapers in northern Illinois, and later went on to become a freelance illustrator. In 1992 he began dropping commercial clients to devote more time to his passion for creating paintings. Steele uses both color and detail to create a depth that pulls one into the painting. His main objective is to create a four dimensional image on a two dimensional plane, giving the illusion that one can walk into the painting to see what is on the other side. Steele’s paintings often stir a memory of a place or an event in the life of the viewer.

    By Francesco Spicuzza

"Cabin on Lake Michigan Shore" is an original oil painting on board by Francesco Spicuzza. The artist signed the piece in the lower left. It depicts a small cabin on the lakeshore surrounded by bright vegetation. 14" x 20" art 22 3/4" x 29" frame Francesco J. Spicuzza, born in Sicily on July 23, 1883, came to America at the age of 8. He supported himself as a fruit peddler until a newspaperman gave him $4 a week to go to school. He attended classes at the Milwaukee Art Students League, where he studied under Alexander Mueller. There he learned to paint in the then-fashionable "Munich School" technique, with detailed realism in heavy browns and grayed-out hues. Spicuzza completed eight grades in four years, and then in 1911, three businessmen advanced him enough money to allow him to study in New York under artist and teacher John Carlson. It was during this time that Spicuzza changed his style of painting, developing an impressionistic use of color, form and atmospheric renditions. After a period of grinding poverty, one of Spicuzza's pictures won a major New York competition. It was the first of 60 wins, both in the U.S. and Paris. He became a fashionable painter, and many of the leading collections have his work. Spicuzza's typical works were beach scenes, still life, landscapes and portraits done in pastels, oils, ink, charcoal and watercolors. Much of his work traced the history of Milwaukee in the early 1900s. He was probably best known for his scenes of women and children splashing in the waves...
