C1870

About the Item

Georgina Lara British, (fl. 1862-1871) A Busy Village Oil on canvas Image size: 11.25 inches x 19.25 inches Size including frame: 16.25 inches x 24.25 inches Provenance: Cooling Galleries, Bond Street, London Georgina Lara also known as Edwina Lara was a London painter of rustic farmyard and village scenes. Her work also closely resembles that of Edward Masters who also went by the name of Thomas Masters and William Masters. They are believed by many to be one in the same. Lara exhibited a number of works at the British Institution and Suffolk Street. Her paintings are full of charm, often containing groups of small figures and detailed buildings. Many of her works are also centred around villages or hamlets such as this lovely example. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse bears a label for Cooling Galleries, an art dealership established around 1903 by John Albert Cooling. It was originally based at 150 Southampton Row, Fleet Street but moved to 92 New Bond Street in 1911, where it remained until the mid 1970’s. The business relocated to 37 Albermarle Street and later merged with Newman & Co to become Newman & Cooling. The gallery closed in April 1993. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

  • 19th Century historical genre oil painting of the gunpowder plot conspirators
    By Ernest Crofts
    Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Ernest Crofts British, (1847-1911) The Gunpowder Plot; the Conspirators Last Stand at Holbeche Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1892 Image size: 11.5 inches x 17.25 inches Size including frame: 19 inches x 24.75 inches A dramatic historical painting depicting the last stand of the gunpowder plot conspirators at Holbeche House, near Dudley, Staffordshire by Ernest Crofts. It is the smaller version of a larger exhibition piece that was shown at the Royal Academy in 1892. Holbeche or Holbeach House was built in 1600 and is located close to Kingswinford near Dudley. The site became famous for being the last refuge of the fugitives from the gunpowder plot of 1605. After Guy Fawkes was arrested on the evening of 4 November, the remaining conspirators, including Robert Catesby, Thomas Percy and Stephen Lyttelton the owner of Holbeche House, fled London and headed for Warwickshire. Upon reaching Warwick Castle and Hewell Grange they raided weapons and gunpowder and then left with the Sheriff of Warwick, Richard Walsh and a posse of men in pursuit soon after. After reaching Holbeche House around 10pm on 7 November, they attempted to dry their damp gunpowder near a fire, but it caught fire and exploded, injuring a number of people and almost destroying the roof of the house. At around midday on 8 November, Walsh caught up with them and proceeded to storm the gates. During the short but fierce fight, several of the plotters including Percy, Catesby, Jack Wright...

  • Antique Scottish Highland Loch landscape, with sunlit streaming onto the water
    By Francis E. Jamieson
    Located in Woodbury, CT
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolor of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolors have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolors are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of oils. Jamieson is known to have traveled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'. - Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at the usual sites. Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc. You may also find some listings under his various pseudonyms of Arnould Pienne, Charles Maurice, Graham Williams...
