About

Gabriele Bella (Venice 1730–1799), attributed Pair of Venetian views: The Fondaco dei Tedeschi / Campo San Salvador oil on canvas, 50 x 77 cm. with frame 59 x 85 cm. Provenance: 21 April 2010 Vienna Dorotheum Exhibitions: Rare old paintings. Abbey of San Gregorio in Venice, from Semenzato, November 2003 (see catalog page in detail) Pair of views of valuable quality, attributable to Gabriele Bella (Venice 1730 - 1799), one of the protagonists of the great eighteenth-century Venetian landscape painting, belonging to the second generation of Venetian landscape painters, whose production is influenced by the examples of Canaletto's illustrious prototypes and Bellotto. Active throughout his career in Venice, Bella worked for a long time exclusively for the Giustiniani, a powerful family of patrons who commissioned him for their home (now home to the Querini-Stampalia art gallery) a grandiose series of about seventy Venetian views, where described the festive life of the Serenissima in its last century of life. To this group of famous canvases is added a corpus of works that the painter executed for the rest of his commission, a series of views of a more canonical taste, depicting the places and buildings of relief, and to which our paintings also belong. Very well executed, characterized by a slight brightness and a chromatic range with delicate hues, highlighted by the contrast between lights and shadows, our canvases are a very interesting testimony of eighteenth-century Venice, portrayed from one of the most famous and extraordinary views of the city . Due to the extremely realistic quality of the compositional typology, noting in particular the rendering of the architecture, typical of the hand of Bella, and the treatment of the figures that animate the painting, the dating is limited to the fifth / sixth decade of the eighteenth century. We see, in particular, in the first work the imposing Fondaco dei Tedeschi, located in the San Marco district and overlooking the Grand Canal, adjacent to the Rialto Bridge. Originally linked to the commercial needs of the Republic of Venice, as a landing point for goods transported by German merchants from Nuremberg, Judenburg and Augusta, it then became, towards the end of the 14th century, the seat of the Fugger family, well-known German merchants and bankers. In the second work Campo San Salvador is immortalized, the square that derives its name from the saint to whom the church is dedicated, the Christ the Savior, apparently built by the Carosi and Gattolosi families already in very ancient times on the exhortation of St. Magno. The views, in excellent conservation conditions, are enriched by two gilded frames. Certificate of photographic authenticity according to law (FIMA). For more information, please contact us.
