About the Item

Oil painting on linen Image size: 9 1/2 x 11 7/8 inches; framed size: 13 x 15 1/2 inches; framed in a 2 1/4 inch wood frame with gold leaf finish. Franz Heckendorf was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1888, where he studied at the Kunstgewerbe Museum and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste. He had his first exhibition at the Berliner Sezession in 1909. The Berlin Secession was a movement and founded by Berlin artists in 1898 as an alternative to the conservative state-run Association of Berlin Artists. That year the official salon jury rejected a landscape by Walter Leistikow, a key figure amongst an avant-garde group of young artists interested in Modernist trends that were developing throughout Europe. Sixty-five artists formed the initial membership of the Secession. Heckendorf's early works followed the tradition of Impressionism. As Heckendorf developed his own style he became an early exponent of German Expressionism in pre-World War I Europe. In addition to numerous oil paintings, Heckendorf produced pastels and watercolors, and worked as a graphic artist throughout his career. Along with other German Expressionist artists during the 1930s Heckendorf's work was branded degenerate by Hitler's Third Reich government. Heckendorf continued painting but was prohibited from exhibiting his work. He also became active in resisting Nazi oppression, fascist ideology, and anti-Semitism. Heckendorf helped organize an underground railroad that helped save over 70 Jews and non-Jews from the Gestapo by helping them flee across the German-Swiss border. Following the end of World War II and the destruction of the Third Reich, he became a professor at the Vienna Academy of Art and later worked in Salzburg. Although Beach Scene with Three Bathers is not signed or dated, the authenticity and date of the painting has been confirmed in documentation obtained directly by the Phyllis Lucas Gallery from Heckendorf's son, Gunter Heckendorf (purchase includes a Certificate of Authenticity. Because of a fire that destroyed a large part of his life's work as a painter Heckendorf's contribution to the emergence of German and European Expressionism as a major artistic movement together with his anti-fascist activism during the rise of Nazi Totalitarianism have are largely unknown, particularly in the United States.
