New York Sunset.

circa 1980's

About the Item

"New York Sunset" is a mixed media painting on paper (oil paint and waterbased paint) by artist Emilio Sanchez. It is painted to the paper edge. Emilio Sanchez returned to the urban skyline time and again. His passion for the ever-changing sky took hold during the 1980's working the ruled lines of the skyscraper in just enough to keep the grandness of both nature and man-made creations. EMILIO SANCHEZ (1921-1999) was born in Camaguey, Cuba, in 1921. His evolution as an artist began with his childhood experiences of the Caribbean landscape and his decision at an early age to become an artist. Subsequent moves to the United States and Mexico in his youth continued to provide fertile ground for his creative and intellectual development. As a young man Sanchez attended Yale University briefly and the University of Virginia (1939-1943), but he began his formal artistic training in 1944 at the Art Students League in New York City. With solo shows in New York in 1949 and 1951, in Mexico City in 1951, and acquisitions of his artwork to the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the 1960’s, Sanchez was quickly on his way to establishing his 50-year career as a professional visual artist working in oils, watercolors, pencil and ink drawings, and printmaking. An artist with an independent voice and international acclaim, Sanchez had over sixty solo exhibitions and has been included in numerous group shows in museums and galleries in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. The work of Emilio Sanchez is well represented in both private and public collections including; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museo de Arte Moderno, Bogotá, Colombia; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Australia; Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX; and Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, PA.

Sight 19" x 15", overall 23" x 19". Adolf Dehn (November 22, 1895 – May 19, 1968) was an American artist known mainly as a lithographer. Throughout his artistic career, he participated in and helped define some important movements in American art, including regionalism, social realism, and caricature. A two-time recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, he was known for both his technical skills and his high-spirited, droll depictions of human foibles. Adolph Dehn was born in 1895 in Waterville, Minnesota. He began creating artwork at the age of six, and by the time of his death had created nearly 650 images. Dehn went to the Minneapolis School of Art (known today as the Minneapolis College of Art and Design), where he met and became a close friend of Wanda Gag. In 1917 he and Gág were two of only a dozen students in the country to earn a scholarship to the Art Students League of New York. He was drafted to serve in World War I in 1918, but declared himself a conscientious objector and spent four months in a guardhouse detention camp in Spartanburg, SC and then worked for eight months as a painting teacher at an arm rehabilitation hospital in Asheville, NC. Later, Dehn returned to the Art Students League for another year of study and created his first lithograph, The Harvest. In 1921 Dehn's lithographs were featured in his first exhibition at Weyhe Gallery in New York City. From 1920 to 1921 in Manhattan, he was connected to New York's politically left-leaning activists. In 1921, he went to Europe. In Paris and Vienna he belonged to a group of expatriate intellectuals and artists, including Andrée Ruellan, Gertrude Stein, and ee cummings...
