Charles François Lacroix de Marseille (attributed to)
18th century Mediterranean Harbour landscape painting - View of Marseille

US$36,308.74

About

17th century French port painting by Claude François Lacroix de Marseille showing a Mediterranean harbour scene Both in terms of size and subject, the present work is a perfect example of the skill and painterly method of Lacroix de Marseille. The treatment of the sunlight, the drapery of the figures' clothing, the manner in which dog is painted, the way the rock is illuminated by the sunlight and so many more details are a signature of his artistic style and talent. Charles François Lacroix de Marseille was an 18th century French landscape and marine painter, deeply inspired by the works of Claude Joseph Vernet, Jean-Joseph Kapeller and Henry of Arles. He was a pupil of Claude Joseph Vernet, and from 1776, exhibited his paintings with great success. He would spent a good part of his later life between Italy and Provence. Although he was a very talented and accomplished artist, his name would only reemerge again in the later half of the 20th century as many of his works were attributed to or sold as works by Claude Joseph Vernet. Not only were the works of both painters very close in terms of topic and execution (Lacroix de Marseille was one of the most talented students of Vernet), but they were also close in terms of age and stylistic period. We cross-referenced this painting with the catalogue raisonée of Vernet ( Joseph Vernet, peintre de marine, 1714-1789. Étude critique suivie d'un catalogue raisonné de son œuvre peint) and we can conclude that this work is not a copy of any known composition, but a completely unique artistic invention, one might say wonder, of Lacroix de Marseille. One can compare the present painting with "Bord de Mer" in the Musée de Beaux Arts de Marseille and "Effet de soleil brumeux" in the Musée d'art de Toulon both by Lacroix de Marseille.
