This superb original marine seascape oil painting is of Verona on the Italian Riviera and was painting in 1901. The painting is by well exhibited British marine and landscape artist Arthur Joseph Meadows. The oil painting depicts a sunny hot marine view with boats on a tranquil water and the city in the background. The light on the water and in the sky are very much in keeping with this beautiful part of Italy. In very good condition, this is a fantastic example of one of the best marine artists of the day. Verona is a city in northern Italy’s Veneto region, with a medieval old town built between the meandering Adige River. It’s famous for being the setting of Shakespeare’s "Romeo and Juliet." A 14th-century residence with a tiny balcony overlooking a courtyard is said be “Juliet’s House." The Verona Arena is a huge 1st-century Roman amphitheatre, which currently hosts concerts and large-scale opera performances Signed lower left and dated 1901. Provenance. London Collection. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 18 inches by 14 inches and in excellent condition. Housed in a fine Victorian gilt frame, 24 inches by 20 inches framed, in good condition. Arthur Meadows (1843-1907) was a painter of coastal and harbour scenes in England, France & Holland. From a family of marine artists, he was the brother of the artist James Edwin Meadows, father of Gordon A. Meadows and son of James Meadows, Snr. Arthur became one of the most revered marine artists of his era and his work has remained in strong demand to this day. He exhibited 36 works in London these being at the Royal Society of British Artists, 10 at the British Institute and 4 at the Royal Academy where he is known to have exhibited from 1863 to 1872.
