Apollonio DomenichiniMaster of Langmatt Foundation View of Rome Square of Holy Apostles
An important work by Apollonio Domenichini also knew as Master of the Langmatt Foundation, that represents the square of Holy Apostoles in Rome. The work made after a copper engraving by Giovanni Battista Falda made in 1665 shows the place in which there were many important palaces of notorious Romans family's like Chigi, Odescalchi and Colonna. The painting was studied by Dario Succi the maximum expert of the Master of the Langmatt foundation that attributed the opera to Apollonio Domenichini and is correlated of his certificate. The Master of the Langmatt Foundation, Apollonio Domenichini, alternatively referred to as the Maestro della Fondazione Langmatt, or Menichini or il Menichino (Venice, 1715 - c.1770) was known as Italian painter of veduta, active in Venice, Italy, between 1740 and 1770. He was a pupil of Luca Carlevarijs and Johan Richter. He is best known for his pictorial representations of views of Venice and its surroundings. His name is recorded in the records of the fraglia or guild of Venetian painters in 1757, and it often appears as the painter of many works sent by the art dealer Giovanni Maria Sasso to the English minister John Strange in the second half of the eighteenth century. His name was proposed as the "master of the Langmatt Foundation" name from the series of thirteen vedute owned by the Langmatt Foundation in Baden near Zurich. There are few vedute made during is permanence in Rome and one of this, one of the most beautiful is the view of Holy Apostles; (Santi Apostoli) built by Pope Pelagius I to celebrate the victory of Narses, the general of the Emperor Justinian, over the Ostrogoths, and dedicated by Pope John III to St. James and Saint Philip the Apostle, the basilica is listed as 'Titulus SS Apostolorum' in the acts of the synod of 499. Santi Apostoli was ruined by the earthquake of 1348 and left abandoned. In 1417, Pope Martin V, whose Colonna family owned the adjacent Palazzo Colonna, restored the church, while the facade was built at the end of the same century by Baccio Pontelli. It was frescoed by Melozzo da Forlì whose wall-paintings at Santi Apostoli were renowned for their innovative techniques of foreshortening and came to be regarded as Melozzo's masterpiece. Pope Clement XI instigated dramatic renovations of the church. Melozzo's frescoes were either destroyed or moved partly to the Quirinal and partly to the Vatican Museums. A new Baroque interior was designed by Carlo Fontana and Francesco Fontana and was completed in 1714. The inscriptions found in SS. XII Apostoli, a valuable source illustrating the history of the church, have been collected and published by Vincenzo Forcella.
