About
"Fog" is an Impressionist landscape on Monhegan Island, Maine, by American painter Alice Kent Stoddard. The 20" x 24" oil on canvas is framed and signed "A K Stoddard" in the lower right. An original label on verso states the painting was dated "1930". Provenance: Private collection, Palm Beach, Florida.
Born in Watertown, Connecticut, Alice Kent Stoddard (American, 1883 - 1976) was a landscape, portrait, and marine painter who spent much of her art career in Philadelphia and on Monhegan Island in Maine. She studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Thomas Eakins, Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase. She also studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, and in 1948, she married artist Joseph Pearson.
During World War I, Stoddard did battlefield drawings and paintings while serving with the YMCA in France. She spent many summers on Monhegan Island, Maine, painting bold colorful landscapes. In Philadelphia, she painted portraits of numerous luminaries such as Federal and Supreme Court judges. She was a frequent exhibitor with the National Academy of Design, of which she was elected an Associate Member in 1938.
