Albert Lebourg
Paysage a Puteaux, Period French Impressionist Oil On Canvas

1880's

About the Item

A late 19th Century French Impressionist landscape by Albert Lebourg. Signed bottom right. In gilt frame. Albert Lebourg (French, 1849–1928) was an Impressionist and landscape painter. Born in Montfort-sur-Risle. Initially studying at Évreux Lycée, Albert Lebourg entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Rouen at a very young age where he studied art with Gustave Morin at l'Academie de peinture et de dessins, Rouen. Afterwards, the artist was briefly a student of Jean-Paul Laurens. In 1876, Lebourg exhibited his works for the first time together with Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and other artists on the Boulevard Montmartre. Lebourg also taught drawing for five years at the École supérieure des beaux-arts in Algiers. In 1878, he returned to France and studied with Jean Paul Laurens; he exhibited with the Impressionists in 1879 and 1880, and at the Salon from 1883 to 1895. Lebourg painted mainly in Auvergne, in Normandy, and along the banks of the Seine; he also traveled to England in 1900, Switzerland in 1902, and Belgium in 1907. Though his works show the influence of the Impressionists, they are imbued with a strong sense of structure and design, apparent even in his most atmospheric scenes. His pictures were very popular with his contemporaries, and several solo exhibitions were held in Paris during his lifetime. In the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition of 1879 Lebourg exhibited 30 works with Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas, presenting paintings and drawings executed in Algiers. In the Fifth Impressionist Exhibition of 1880 he exhibited 20 works depicting Rouen, Paris and Algiers. In 1883 he was admitted to the Salon (Paris) with his work entitled Matinée à Dieppe. In 1887 he exhibited at the acclaimed Les XX exhibition, with Walter Sickert, Camille Pissarro, Berthe Morisot and Georges-Pierre Seurat, with Seurat and Signac present at the opening. Lebourg painted in all four seasons, animated scenes of the Seine in and near Rouen and Paris. He painted in Auvergne, Normandy and Île-de-France, finally settling in Puteaux where he remained from 1888 to 1895, availing himself of the surroundings of Paris, painting what he would regard as his best works. He wrote at the time: "I will paint often at the banks of the Seine: Nanterre, Rueil, Chatou, Bougival, Port-Marly. These are a source of themes and very beautiful landscapes". (Lebourg) He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français beginning in 1893. Lebourg moved to the Netherlands in 1895, where he would stay two years. He exhibited to great acclaim at the Mancini Gallery in Paris and won the silver medal at the Exposition Universelle (1900). In 1903 a retrospective exhibition was organized presenting 111 works at the Gallerie Rosenberg, the art gallery of Paul Rosenberg at 21 rue de la Boétie in Paris. While his fame was firmly established by 1910 he continued exhibiting annually at the Salon. In 1918 another retrospective was organized in Paris. At the home of Impressionist art collector François Depeaux (1853–1920), Lebourg had the opportunity to converse many times with Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, and Robert Antoine Pinchon (an artist who greatly admired him). 13 November 1909, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen opened a show with fifty-two paintings: thirteen by Lebourg, three by Monet, nine by Sisley, one by Renoir, three by Armand Guillaumin, five by Joseph Delattre, two by Charles Frechon and four by Robert Antoine Pinchon. In 1918, in the same museum, Lebourg was represented along with Bonnard, Boudin, Camoin, Cross, Guillaumin, Luce, Matisse, Monet, Signac and Vuillard and Pinchon. He suffered a stroke in September 1920 that paralyzed the left side of his body. He nevertheless remarried in February 1921. A Catalogue Raisonné was organized that year that included 2,137 works and was released in 1923, which garnered united praise by the press. He was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honour on 27 June 1903, and breveted Officer of the Legion of Honour 22 April 1924. Albert Lebourg died in Rouen on 7 January 1928. Lebourg's works are exhibited at the Musée d’Orsay, Petit-Palais, Musee du Jeu de Paume and Carnavalet in Paris, as well as museums in Bayonne, Clermont-Ferrand, Le Havre, Dunkerque, Lille, Strasbourg, Sceaux and above all Rouen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen (François Depeaux collection). Internationally his work is represented in several museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, and the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.

  • Orientalist Beach Scene, Chenoua Plage, Algerie, Oil On Canvas.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
An Orientalist beach scene of the coast of Algeria at Chenoua by French painter Gustave Lino. The painting is signed, located and dated bottom left. Presented in a plain gilt frame. A charming and atmospheric view of a day at the beach. The revellers are enjoying bathing in the Mediterranean, resting under their colourful parasols against the sun and exploring the far off rocks of the cove. The sea gently lapping against the rocks at the shore. A small row boat ready for an excursion. Lino has beautifully captured the feeling of joy and fun that a day at the beach brings. Gustave Lino was born in 1893 in Mulhouse, France. At the age of twenty, he went to Marseille, discovered Provence and the Mediterranean. He was already interested in painting and art from numerous visits to the museum of his hometown, but he had not yet followed any training in this field. In Marseille, far from home and idle, he decides, almost on a whim, to travel to Algiers, without really knowing what he will discover there. He embarked for Algiers at the age of 19 in 1912. He exhibited with his friends Romeo Charles Aglietti in 1914 at 'Herero' in Algiers. Unfortunately in 1914 in Corsica in Ajaccio, being of German nationality and Mulhouse being part of the German Empire since 1871, he was interned as a 'civilian'. He spent the First World War in the Isle of Beauty but spent his time wisely developing his artistic skills. He realised many paintings as well as the historical decorations of the Solferino Hotel in Ajaccio and the religious decorations of the castle of Malaspena-Massa in Belgodère. In December 1918, he returned to Algiers where he was a pupil of Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1926 and at the Danton gallery, rue La Boétie in 1927. He settled permanently in Algiers and then in Bou-Saada. Back in Algeria, he took a close interest in the painting of Albert Marquet, which particularly seduced him and with whom he became a close friend. The transparent sharpness, this harmony of lines and tones becomes his ideal of perfection. He specialised in Algerian seascapes and landscapes, a colourist above all. Becoming an adopted member of the group called "Painters of Poetic Reality" (with Jean...

  • French Impressionist View of Paris, Le Pont Marie and Île Saint-Louis
    Located in Cotignac, FR
French Impressionist oil on board view of a fisherman at the riverbank of the Seine in Paris next to the Bridge St Marie, with the old spire of Notre Dame in the distance. The painting is initial signed, located and dated bottom left. Presented in a patinated wood frame. There is a trade label for the Rowley Gallery in Kensington Church Street to the backboard. A charming Impressionist painting of an iconic Parisian view. The Seine with all its reflected colours passing beneath the arches of an ancient bridge, a church spire just visible through the canopy of the trees, colourful boats moored, a fisherman sitting in the shade of the riverbank hopeful of a catch. The artist has managed to capture all the languid, quiet beauty of the scene in the midst of a bustling metropolis which is Paris. The water in the Seine is full of colour and nuance and the green of the trees give the painting a freshness. A very accomplished composition beautifully executed. Le Pont Marie crossing the Seine in Paris. The bridge links the Île Saint-Louis to the quai de l'Hôtel de Ville and is one of three bridges designed to allow flow between the Île Saint-Louis and the Left and Right banks...
