A good large oil by the Modern British artist Julius Olsson R.A. (1864-1944) circa 1930's. oil on canvas : 61cmx76cm / 24"x30" Hardwood painted gallery frame and giltwood slip : 82cmx97cm/ 32"x38" A seascape with distant boats off the Lizard Point in Cornwall. Olsson is a very collected British Impressionist painter famous for his seascapes and coastal views in Cornwall and Ireland capturing the differing weather conditions and seasonal changes with a great knowledge. This oil is a view from The Lizard, Cornwall, the most southerly point of England. A dramatic piece depicting a passing storm in choppy seas. A plein air piece of work, possibly painted from a boat a sea. The heavy clouds give way to blue skies reflected in the waves. On the horizon, are the headland and distant passing boats in the difused light created by the wind and spray. Signed , lower left. Paint surface in good stable condition, minor cracquelure the surface. Three old small patch repairs and minor touching restoration, see photo. Julius Olsson (1864-1942) Royal Academician A larger than life character, described by The Studio as “a big man with a big heart, who paints big pictures with big brushes in a big studio,” Julius Olsson was pivotal to the second wave of artistic immigration to St. Ives in the 1890s. His work was first accepted at the Royal Academy in 1890, and he joined the New English Art Club in 1891. With little or no formal artistic training himself, he set up studio on Porthmeor beach, St. Ives. This became, in 1895, the premises for the School of Landscape and Marine Painting. Teaching in conjunction with Louis Grier and Algernon Talmage, Olsson soon built a reputation that attracted aspiring marine painters from far-afield, including Mary McCrossan and the Australian, Richard Hayley Lever. Of Swedish descent, Olsson was portrayed by contemporary reviewers as a latter-day Viking, roaming abroad on the briny-deep with paintbrush and easel, capturing images of the sea in all of its many moods. He was indeed an accomplished yachtsman
