About

Rigolot was enchanted not only by landscape but by the character of the landscape - his paintings are masterful renditions of luminous landscapes. His technique, which evolved around this interest in the natural features of a stream, the land or a river, was such that his landscapes were brightened or darkened by a colorful and diversified palette; his brushwork created interesting shadings. This play with light and the fluttering of light allowed him to create wonderful textures across water, grass, leaves, hillsides and the sky. He thus endowed an otherwise simple setting with great atmosphere and character which to the viewer were more than just stillness; it was, instead, deliciously enjoyed silence. Rigolot also shows a solid understanding of draftsmanship so that no single part distracts the viewer from the whole of the composition. His beautiful or charming details appear consequently across a striking composition. He was admired greatly for his naturalism while he lived. The reviewer for “The Salon of 1896” wrote: “Rigolot is among the artists who clearly demonstrate the importance of the artist’s refusal to let his skill with the paintbrush interfere with the instruction of his spirit.”
