About the Item
Collaboration between Jane Bauman and David Wojnarowicz
Jane Bauman writes: "I had made that bleak/black house stencil that I used in San Francisco and had it when I moved to NYC in 1980. In the early 80s when I was hanging out with David [Wojnarowicz] we both saw that we were using a few similar images and we agreed that there were some images that we both used that were very generic (like the map of the USA) and others that we had each developed. David's burning house was one of his signature images and one of mine was using the SX70 polaroid frame. We agreed between the two of us that I wouldn't use my dark house image and he wouldn't use the Polaroid. It was during this time in 1981-82 that David and I did some collaborative work--it was a very spontaneous and playful thing. So while we were discussing this in my dumpy studio on 1st Avenue and 9th Street, my dark house stencil was sitting there and David said, 'We need to set this house on fire,' and he took a can of red day-glo paint and sprayed a big day-glo blotch on it! It was perfect!"

Characterized by bright block letters and cartoonish depictions of human figures, the artist’s paintings and tattoos are influenced by comic books and television shows. “Graffiti lost its edge in the mid-1980s, and that’s why I needed to find other mediums like tattooing and clothing to put my name to,” he explained. Born Richard Mirando in 1961 in the Bronx, NY, he first began spray painting in 1973, alongside his graffiti crew United Artists. By the early 1980s, Seen had transitioned to work on canvas and began participating in shows alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
