Victor Di Gesu
'Janet Seated', Paris, Louvre, Salon d'Automne, Académie Chaumière, LACMA, SFAA

Circa 1965

About the Item

Signed lower right, "Di Gesu", for Victor Di Gesu (American, 1914-1988); further signed and titled verso, and bearing original exhibition label. A substantial figural oil showing Victor di Gesu's wife, the artist Janet Ament, with a white shawl over her knees and seated cross-legged in front of a large ficus. A major work by this notable California Fauve and long-time member of the Carmel Art Association who exhibited widely and with success from the 1960s through the 1980's. Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Victor di Gesu first attended the Los Angeles Art Center and the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris where he studied with Andre L’Hote and Yves Brayer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. While in Paris, Di Gesu exhibited extensively, including at the Louvre, the Exposition des Artistes Étrangères, the Grand Palais of the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Arts Décoratifs among other Parisian Salons. He subsequently attended Barcelona's Escuela de Bellas Artes before furthering his studies in Rome at the Studio Hinna. Returning to California, Di Gesu worked beside several notable American Modernists including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson. Already a gifted colorist, Di Gesu’s classical training combined with his scientific research into color theory, allowed him to create vivid yet harmonious works which, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, revealed a verve and spontaneity that remained uniquely his own. A prolific artist, Victor Di Gesu was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and in France. After his return to California, he continued to exhibit widely and with success, including at the San Francisco Museum of Art, Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, the Carmel Art Association and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

JEAN GABRIEL DOMERGUE French, 1889 – 1962 "JEUNE FEMME AUX FLEURS" Signed & dated "Jean-Gabriel Domergue ´28 " (lower right) With the Atelier stamp on the stretcher and canvas on the reverse Oil on canvas 32 X 25-3/4 inches (81 x 65 cm.) framed: 39-1/2 X 33-1/4 inches (100 X 84 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Madrid Note: We are grateful to Mr. Noé Willer for confirming the authenticity of this work which is recorded in the archives of the Artist. Painter born in Bordeaux, in 1889 and died in Paris in 1962. He began painting his mother's portraits very soon. He studied at the National Superior School of Fine Arts. The artist considered his teacher and inspiring Degas. Between 1904 and 1907 he joined Fauvism. In 1905 he participated in the "Autumn Hall" and in the "Hall of Independents". In 1907 he presented his 1st individual exhibition at the Vollard Gallery. He specialized in female portraits of Parisian ladies, creating a unique, sophisticated and elegant female portrait prototype that characterized him forever. He played an essential role in the evolution of women's fashion of his time. He designed numerous dresses, hats and accessories for famous designers such as Paul Poiret and Henry Marque It goes down in history as the architect of a new type of woman, thin, with an elegant air, always with style, with unusual elongated necks, with impressive slanted eyes, that seem to look at the world in amazement, perhaps because they express a feeling of freedom towards Society and its norms. With these paintings of women, he showed the world the true French, elegant, beautiful and with a gooseneck. In 1914 he won the Rome Prize. Many celebrities of the time posed for the artist, Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, etc. But although he painted numerous nude actresses...
