About the Item

Thomas Francis Dicksee, a renowned portrait and genre painter, was the patriarch in a family of accomplished Victorian painters. He showed an aptitude for painting at an early age executing portraits of his family and friends. At age 19, Dicksee entered the atelier of Henry Perronet Briggs at the Royal Academy and soon he established himself in London as a portrait painter. Thomas was the brother of John Robert and the father of Francis Bernard (Frank), Herbert Thomas and Margaret Isabel, all talented artists in their own rights. Predominantly a figurative painter, Thomas Dicksee executed historical and literary genre subjects as well as portraits. The artist’s paintings featuring children, often in endearing vignettes where they sit playing games or entertaining a household pet, were quite popular. His other genre pieces tended to portray idealistic, romantic and beautiful women, often clothed in historical and classical costume, and were highly sought after in Victorian England. However, he is most know for his later pieces that were almost always depictions of characters taken from the plays of William Shakespeare such as his painting entitled Kate from “The Taming of the Shrew”. Such sentimental and beautiful paintings had a strong appeal to the Victorian era art-buying public who, for the first time, coveted pictures solely for their aesthetic appeal. Artists such as Dicksee strove to incorporate a woman's spirituality or soul in their works. This genre embodied the growth of materialism and new wealth culminating in a style known as the Belle Epoque. In this vein, Dicksee grew increasingly adept at executing the texture and glimmer of rich fabrics and accouterments.
