Samuel Wilson
"We the People" Figurative Narrative "Being Human" vs "Human Being"

2019

About the Item

Samuel Wilson (Born 1986) San Antonio, TX Image Size: 30 x 24 Medium: Oil on Board "WE THE PEOPLE" When you see them in person you will say UNBELIEVEABLE. From his series "Being Human" vs. "Human Being" The paintings in this series all have a figurative aspect to them and each portrays an idea or emotion. At first glance you will think "portraiture" but after a long hard look you will think something completely different. What Sam is trying to convey to us is something far from just portraiture. Portraiture is really a description for reproducing an individual's image. This work is much more. What Sam is portraying through his brush is describing ideas and emotions with the subjects being the vehicles to illustrate those feelings. In short these works are less about the people in the paintings and more about the shared ideas and experiences that relate to all people. If you stare long enough you can almost look into the souls of his subjects. Biography Born in 1986 in Wicihta, KS, Sam is a self taught artist, growing up around art and starting out enjoying drawing. Throughout high school Sam took several art classes but was mainly focused in ceramics. It was in 2008 during a break from college Sam became more serious about art. He painted his first oil painting under the guidance of his father, a major influence in his art. Since then Sam has been painting and creating art, pushing and evolving his style and technique. The name "Spot Slim", which for a time was how Sam signed his work, originated as a name he used as a street performer. He still holds the name as a sort of brand for his other creative endevors. Sam currently creates and resides in San Antonio, TX. Artwork signed on verso.

Debra Benditz Texas Artist Image Size: 48 x 24 Medium: Oil "High Plains Blossom" Cowgirl We will only ship in the Continental United State for posted shipping price. Debra Benditz Texas Artist Statement My oil paintings are a vibrant expression of the feminine and the can-do spirit of the Wild American West as embodied by my paternal grandmother and great-grandmother, both award-winning horsewomen. I use saturated colors, often found in nature, to interpret burgeoning growth, beauty and the human form especially of Jennie Pawson and Aeola Huston Mitchell, my cowgirl ancestors. I know these feisty women from stories I heard my father tell and from old photographs showing the time Jennie met Theodore Roosevelt, and another from 1901, when she was named a champion of the Cheyenne, Wyoming Frontier Days. As a child I spent hours on the floor of my grandfather’s music room as Enrico Caruso serenaded me from the Victrola. I gazed in awe at the tall bookcases, art-covered walls and my grandfather’s art nouveau postcard...
