Peter van Poppel
''Breitner Newspaper'' Contemporary Portrait of a Woman with Breitner Newspaper

1975

About the Item

Peter van Poppel (1945-2023) is one of the most important new realists in the Netherlands. His paintings are often populated by lovely, sometimes fairytale-like figures. Each one has something magical and childlike about it. Although his work appears very contemporary, the art lover immediately recognizes the influence of old masters such as Rembrandt and Carel Farbritius. Van Poppel's works, usually modest in size, continue to intrigue. The scenes sometimes seem ordinary, but each one transcends reality. The painter creates a dreamlike fantasy world full of hidden meanings, iconographic references and references to other works. The enchanting works of art are always open to multiple interpretations. Although the persons who figure in his work appear naive and innocent at first sight, they often seem to harbor desires and secrets. 'Everything was covered with dust and I was allowed to dust it with a brush,' says Utrecht-based painter Peter van Poppel (1945) about his work ''Breitner Newspaper''. Although the date on the work (1975-1977) states that it took Van Poppel two years to complete the work, in reality it was much longer. In oil on panel, Van Poppel has depicted a lady with a newspaper in her hands. If you look closely at the newspaper, you will see that it is full of photos by Dutch painter George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923). At a time when photography was not very highly regarded, Breitner took thousands of photos, mostly photos taken on the street. He saw photography as an opportunity to visualize something more clearly. Van Poppel was allowed to dust some of these photos. We see not only a self-portrait of Breitner, but also the photograph Two women on the Dam in Amsterdam from 1900. Van Poppel also used the exciting nudity that Breitner captured with his camera for his painting. Like all of Van Poppel's work, this work continues to intrigue. It seems so commonplace, but it transcends reality. Peter van Poppel is also unique in terms of painting style. He works just as delicately as old masters like Vermeer, with a lot of attention and love for detail. Once you are familiar with his oeuvre, you will not soon forget it. He knows how to put his own subtle sense of humor in his work. They are paintings to fall in love with.
