About

Who am I. Italian contemporary painting, collage, red and white clown, 2017 Collage on board, 130 x 100 cm "I started painting to fill in color the empty nights that suddenly I found myself living and that is how my life recolored with happiness". Happiness reconquered after moments of pain, looking for oneself and what one wants to do and / or become. "Who am I?" A question so simple to ask but so difficult to answer. Heinrich Boll in The Clown wrote: Everyone knows that a clown must be melancholy to be a good clown, but that for him melancholy is a serious matter to die, so far they do not come. And this seems to be the message that Paul wants to tell us through the painting. The interpretation of a character away from the self and created just to make people laugh with the grotesque tale of his misfortunes, but who really hides under that red nose? The dominant colors of the painting are red, white, gray and black. In this painting too, writing plays a pivotal role: hand-written plays of words emerge from the canvas, poetic mottoes and quotations full of meaning, slogans and newspaper clippings that contain explicit references to the meaning of the painting and to the current world in general. The evocative visual atmosphere contained in the collages of Paolo Franzoso, have the power to enchant the viewer, to intrigue his/her mind and lead him/her to make a wander inside that piece of world where images, colors, words of life, objects and recycled materials try to overlap to come out from the canvas itself. His artworks are characterized by their "chaotic atmosphere", in which getting lost to find ourselves in some corner of the picture, in the silent breath of our own balance. The greatest gift that Paul Franzoso has, it is the ability to give new life to things, reinterpreting them, with enormous creative energy.
