About the Item

SHIPS FROM NEW YORK. Michael Hafftka is an American artist based in Brooklyn. In December 2018 the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, added 9 additional works to its Hafftka permanent collection. His works are held in many other important US museums (see below). An important work for understanding Hafftka’s philosophy of painting is "Memory", 2016. Based on a recurring dream he had as a young child, the memory of it in later life was to bring him to a significant epiphany that changed his approach to painting: About "Memory", Hafftka says: "When I was a child before the age of 10, I had a recurring nightmare that woke me up in a cold sweat shivering with fear. The nightmare was that I was on a railroad handcar pumping relentlessly, going in all directions simultaneously at the speed of light and at any moment I would be completely obliterated. I never told my parents about the nightmare but every time it happened I was overwhelmed by it. Then one night I decided that I am not going to wake up, I am going to continue on the car and see what happens. The most astonishing thing happened, the experience turned to pleasure. In fact it was so desirable, I tried to recreate the feeling over and over again." Whatever the subject matter, Hafftka’s paintings are internal visions, not literal representations of an event or idea. His paintings are the sum of his memories, intellectual ruminations, daily observations and dreams that materialise as a vision, which he is then compelled to paint. He is a painter who has continuously and courageously stood by his convictions and who, despite his family’s experience as Holocaust survivors, seeks the good in people. But precisely because of those experiences, Hafftka is well aware that good can quickly become sinister if we let our guard down.
