Estherly Allen
'For Love of Life' original ceramic plaque by Estherly Allen

ca. 1973

About the Item

This small plaque is an intimate and exciting example of the ceramic work of Estherly Allen. She was a student of George McNeil, an important Abstract Expressionist, and this Expressionist influence is visible in this experimental work. In the image, the gestural painted glazes add a sense of spontaneity and energy to the landscape and figures. White ceramic with yellow, black and white glazes 7.75 x 7.75 inches, artwork 13.25 x 14.75 inches, frame Framed in an unglazed shadow box with a dark chocolate modern profile moulding; mounted on a hardboard backing. Artist's Statement: Walking outside my door bordering the Prescott National Forest I gather objects in the landscape and on the path of everyday life. It is impossible not to find a treasure. This is the impetus and fuel I use to build my mixed media sculptures and collages. With the addition of wire, adhesives, paper, and more, new forms emerge in a spirited improvisational dance. A no-thought logic brings direction into focus. Propelled by this intuitive freedom the unconscious reveals endless curious beautiful worlds of figures, faces, and places. The real becomes abstracted, the unconscious evokes the surreal. Ease and connection from the inside out reinforce the foundation of my oneness with nature and my creative process. Allen is from Wisconsin and currently lives in Arizona with her sculptor husband, Gene Galazan. 1942 Born - Milwaukee, WI 1965 B.S. - Art Education, UW-Milwaukee, WI 1967 M.S. - Art Education, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY 1976 M.F.A. - Master of Fine Arts, Drawing & Painting, UW-Milwaukee, WI

In artist Gail Ragains' figurative piece, a woman takes a breather on the beach. She reclines comfortably on a green chair, in a mix of gestural marks within a thought-out composition. The muted color combination allows the warm and cool shades to play off each other.

    About the Artist
Artist Gail Ragains paints abstract figurative works defined by strong color combinations and intuitive mark-making. "I approach each creative process as an open-ended improvisation," says Gail. "It is an evolving journey without preconceived plans for a predictable outcome. I react to the materials at hand, stripping away the non-essentials to give a loose interpretation of form, movement, and human expression." Inspired by the physical gestures and emotions of people, the human figure dominates Gail's art. As a young person, Gail was active in dance, ice skating, and gymnastics and competed in triathlons in her 20s. While pursuing a career as a massage therapist for 25 years, Gail simultaneously attended art classes through community colleges, the local Art League, and workshops with artists she admires. Having lived in California her entire life, Gail is influenced by the California colors—golden hills, clear blue skies, swimsuits, and swimming pools. Today, her studio is in her backyard just a few steps away from the home she shares with her husband. “In this workspace, I have everything I need. Good light, music, fresh air, and my studio mate, Sadie, the cutest 14 lb. mixed-breed rescue pup.”
