Victory in Europe day 1945 celebrations at Temple Bar in London with the Royal Family in a horse drawn open carriage being received by the Lord Mayor of London while crowds look on. The American and British allied flags are shown flying high and glorious in victory.
The painting is signed by the artist John Leigh-Pemberton and the frame is likely to be the original.
Framed Size: 30" x34".
John Leigh-Pemberton exhibited two paintings at the Royal Academy, three at the New English Art Club, two at the RCA and fifteen at the ROI during 1934-1938. In case you are wondering, John Leigh-Pemberton was indeed related to Robin Leigh-Pemberton, the Governer of the Bank of England, who, whether by coincidence or design, was practicing at Temple Bar some years after this painting was set. John Leigh-Pemberton was the great-grandson of Edward Leigh Pemberton. He was born on 18 October 1911 and was educated at Eton; he studied art in London between 1928 and 1932. During the Second World War he was a flying instructor for the RAF and was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1945. As well as his book illustrations, Leigh-Pemberton carried out advertising work and decorated a number of ships. He also did work for the Shell Guides series. However perhaps his best-known work was carried out for the Ladybird series of books for children, where he wrote and illustrated many of the series dealing with natural history subjects.
