c.1940

$4,927.89

About

A beautifully coloured oil on canvas circa 1940 by French Impressionist painter Jules Rene Herve depicting figures fishing on the banks of the River Seine in Paris. Signed lower left and again verso. Dimensions: Unframed: 18"x22" This painting is not currently framed but a suitable frame can be sourced if required. Provenance: Private French collection Jules Rene Hervé began his formal art studies in an evening school in Langres, France. Hervé was trained at the Ecole nationale supérieure d’arts decoratifs of Paris, and studied with Fernand Cormon and Jules Adler. As early as 1910, his work was shown in Paris Salons where his paintings were described as “jewels” of French scenery. The French Government awarded him a travelling scholarship in 1924 and in 1925 he won a Gold Medal. He also won a golden medal at the International Paris Exhibition in 1937. Between 1911-1943 he taught other artists and he also won the Belle Table Prize and the Leguay Prize. His work has been purchased by the most of the leading museums in France and although he represented the purest tradition of French art and paints with great impressionism, he was completely unaffected by the current fashion of art. He has always sought to master the technical secrets of art and painted with a marvellous harmony of colour and light. Elected Vice President of the Salon des Artistes Francais and a member of The Jury of the Society of French Artists. As specialist dealers in the work of Jules Rene Herve we have bought and sold in excess of 300 paintings by the artist over the last 20 years. We are considered as experts on his work and have analysed his paintings in detail across the many decades that he painted - where his style matured and developed, especially his colour palette and his later board brushwork. Invariably his work is signed both on the recto and verso and it is most unusual to find a painting that is NOT signed on the back. His work was not copied very often but on the odd occasion that we do see work come up that bears his signature the paint and brushwork do not correspond and the paintings are hardly ever signed on the reverse. In the last few years there has been an increase in forgeries of his paintings and if you are in any doubt about a work that you own or are considering purchasing then we will offer a verbal opinion on the work based on photographs free of charge. Jules Rene Herve's work is held in the following permanent collections: Chicago Art Institute, Musée d'art et d'histoire de Langres, Musée du Petit Palais in Paris, Casablanca Morocco, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tourcoing, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Étienne, Musée des Beaux-arts d'Annecy Dahesh Museum - New York City.
