BIBLIOGRAPHY This picture being mentioned and illustrated in “LA ILUSTRACION ARTISTICA” 1916. PROVENANCE Private Collection Montevideo, Uruguay Jose Mongrell ( Valencia , 3 August of 1870 - Barcelona , 5 November of 1937 ) was a painter Valencia . He studied at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Carles in Valencia , where he was a disciple of Ignasi Pinazo and Joaquim Sorolla. His participation in various competitions and exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona earned him a certain reputation in artistic circles. He made the bull poster for the Fira de Sant Jaume in Valencia in 1897, with great success. He obtained a teaching position at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona , where he resided for the rest of his life. In front of the Saló Sant Jordi of the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya he made a large work, commissioned by the President of the Diputació de Barcelona during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera , representing the Virgin of Montserrat with saints and kings worshiping him. He cultivated genre painting , portraiture and customary themes with a Valencian atmosphere, very much in line with Sorolla, where reminiscences of nineteenth- century art and a certain statism can be seen in the figures. His work is in the National Museum of Ceramics and Sumptuous Arts "Gonzàlez Martí" and in the Museu Sant Pius V , both in Valencia.
