About the Item

This abstract contemporary painting features a basketball team. The artist utilized mainly pink with black, blue, green, yellow, and brown. About this piece: This is a painting I had been wanting to make for a long time. It's painted from a thrity-year old photograph I have of my elementary school basketball team. That's me in the middle with the basketball. I was terrible at basketball but I was the smallest guy on the team so I think I was placed there for composition. I see this painting as a companion piece to the group of large portraits. While those portraits are large and command the space, they are also lonely and separated from one another by the physical boundaries of the canvas. They have borders and biases built from their experiences and years of life. In this small painting of the team, these 11 and 12 year-olds are shoulder- to-shoulder. They are a team and are physically working together toward a common goal. We hadn't learned to be afraid of the “other” yet and it was a beautiful time. Artist Statement: “We were once again children on tippy toes, hoping to see a little farther than before. We had to pay attention. This time it was life and death. Our old ankles wobbled and cracked and we ended up back on the ground, on all four corners of our feet. We were more aware of the Earth and our weight than ever before. What did we just see? The pieces in this show were painted during the past year. They are about everything I can think of. The work is spontaneous even though most of it has been floating around my head for years; a giggle or a cry that seemingly comes out of no-where but you know deep down they've been building inside you. You let them out and keep going. We're too old to be embarrassed for long. There's not enough time. The idea of standing on your “tippy toes” as a way to temporarily see beyond your own perspective can be applied to the amplified search for racial equality, the political divide, and the global pandemic. Tippy toes is also a nod to childhood, innocence, nostalgia, hope, wonder, and dancing. All of these things are players in these pieces. My eyes are still wide, my ankles are still a-tryin'.” – Excerpt of Tippy Toes Exhibition Statement. Artist Bio: John Paul Kesling (b.1980) was born and raised on the banks of the Ohio River, spending much of his time outdoors. He attended Morehead State University in Morehead, KY for his BFA in Arts and spent a semester in Europe studying art history. Kesling went on to receive his MFA in Painting from The Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010. He spent the next six years in Brooklyn, NY immersed in the NYC art scene. In March of 2016, he attended a month-long residency at The Vermont Studio Center. While there, he realized how integral time, space, and nature were to his studio practice and in July 2016 he relocated to Madison, TN. He has recently had solo shows at Red Arrow Gallery (Nashville, TN), Oz Arts (Nashville, TN) and Tim Faulkner Gallery (Louisville, KY). He is represented by Red Arrow Gallery. He now owns a dog.
