Johannes Schiefer"Auteuil, Paris" Framed Original Oil on Canvas Board by Johannes Schiefer
"Auteuil, Paris," an original oil on canvas by Johannes Schiefer, is a piece for the true collector. Schiefer's masterful ability to capture his subjects in his post-impressionist style is apparent in this work. This masterful work pairs perfectly with its original frame and would make a great addition to an art collection, enhancing most any home – perfect for those who have an affinity for figurative works, post-impressionism, and abstracts. This fabulous work captures various scenes from the illustrious history of the area. Auteuil, Paris is not generally frequented by tourists. It is a village by the River Seine with origins dating back to the 12th Century. It eventually became home to some of the world’s most fascinating and illustrious literary and stage personalities, along with a mix of aristocrats and diplomats. Residents included Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, father of the classical French play, “La Comédie Française,” playwright Jean Racine, poet-critic Nicolas Boileau, writer Madeleine de Scudéry, future US Presidents John and John Quincy Adams (while John Adams negotiated treaties between France and US colonies 1784-1785), and Benjamin Franklin, who was a very popular personality in French society. The Bonaparte family also frequented the area, including Napoléon Bonaparte. Johannes Schiefer, born in Alsace-Lorraine in 1896, gained notoriety for his landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at 19 years old and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, Beaux Arts in Paris, and Villa Medici in Rome. He traveled to paint across Europe (primarily France and Italy) and Latin America. When he married, he settled down in France, and during the late thirties, he traveled along the coastline painting the South of France, as well as Venice and the Adriatic. He remained in France until 1942, when he moved his family to New York after the birth of their daughter, future actress Joanna Miles. Already an artist of stature when he arrived in New York, he settled with his family on Long Island, and for the next 30 years, Schiefer kept on painting and built a solid reputation as an important American artist. The Schiefers also had a son, Johannes Jr. After the war, Schiefer maintained a Paris studio and became a resident of Los Angeles for a time in the 1950s. Like Picasso, Schiefer never permitted himself to be “type-cast” in a single monotonous style. If there is anything that typifies his work, it is his versatility, his deft handling of subdued tones to create a unique brilliance of light and color that stamps every painting with his own individuality. In February 1964, Ethel Kennedy happened to meet the artist at Donald Patterson’s decorating establishment on Worth Avenue in New York City. Donald described the meeting saying that she “just looked in wonderment when Johannes came in with one of his paintings. The Kennedy family has collected Schiefer paintings for a long time, but Ethel Kennedy had never before come face to face with the painter.” After looking at a few of his works, she commissioned Schiefer to create a painting of Monaco for her. This was the beginning of a wonderful relationship and many more commissioned works followed. During his career, Schiefer had numerous one man shows. Selected exhibitions: Gallery Zak (Paris) Museum of Modern Art (New York City) Kunsthaus Hamburg (Hamburg) Munich Kunsthalle (Munich) Stiebel Galleries (Paris) O'Connor Gallery (Ontario) Wildenstein & Co (New York City) Carol Carstairs Gallery (New York City) Schoeneman Galleries (New York City) Esther Robles Gallery (Los Angeles) County Museum (Los Angeles) Vigoveno Galleries (Los Angeles) San Francisco Museum (San Francisco) As his work gained notoriety in New York, he eventually became curator at the Parrish Art Museum in Long Island. Johannes Schiefer passed away at his home in Manhattan in 1979 at the age of 83. His work is represented in museums and prominent private collections around the world. Occasionally one hits the auction block, with a notable 2008 Christie’s auction sale realizing a $22,500 price.
