About
A large 19th century oil on canvas depicting a girl Italian girl sitting by a fountain peeling an apple by the eminent French academic painter Jacques-Eugène Feyen (1815-1908). ‘La Fille à la Fontaine’ is signed by the artist and presented in a good quality giltwood neoclassical frame.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that fully insured, tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
In 1837 Jacques-Eugène Feyen began studying under Paul Delaroche at the École des Beaux-Arts. Between 1841 and 1882 he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was awarded medals in 1866 and 1880. Among Feyen’s admirers was Vincent van Gogh who described him as "one of the few painters who pictures intimate modern life as it really is and does not turn it into fashion plates."
When the ‘Mona Lisa’ was stolen from the Louvre in 1913 it was Feyen’s copy of La Gioconda that temporarily replaced it on the museum wall until Leonardo’s original was recovered. Jacques-Eugène Feyen was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur in 1881.

Presentation: Good early 20th century giltwood frame.

Conservation: Where necessary the paintings we sell are cleaned and restored by Fine Art Restoration (est.1974) or Simon Gillespie Studio, as seen on BBC Television's 'Fake or Fortune' and 'Britain's Lost Masterpieces'.
