  • Warm Toned Modern Portrait of a Medieval Woman
    Located in Houston, TX
Warm toned modern portrait of a medieval woman wearing red dress against a blue background. Signed "Charles Campbell" at bottom right corner. Matted in linen and framed in black and gold frame. Dimensions Without Frame: H 20 in. x W 15 in. Artist Biography: Charles Campbell has been hailed as one of the more distinctive and imaginative contemporary American Painters of our time. In a highly individual style he combined rich vibrant colors with elaborate textures and composition. His paintings, described as modern by conservatives, and considered conservative by Avant-Garde groups, have their own unique balance of design. Charles was a quiet man who tended to make strong social statements in his paintings, some subtle, some obviously satirical, others full of fantasy and humor. A perfectionist, (he has destroyed over two-thirds of his work during his career), he painted every day until his eyes gave out and then often did some sculpting. His aim, he said, was to "Express my vision of the world in the purest possible terms." As a young man he drew inspiration from Daumier, particularly his outstanding draftsmanship. He also learned a great deal from Renoir in his handling of paint and tonal variations. El Greco's contribution is seen in the intensity and luminosity of many of Campbell's paintings, just as Picasso's line and description of the human form can be seen in others. Charles Campbell was born in Dayton, Ohio, but spent most of his boyhood in Springfield, Ohio. At 17 his family moved to Cleveland where he enrolled in the Cleveland School of Art (now the Cleveland Institute of Art), and spent five years there, receiving a B.A. degree in 1928. He taught one year at this school, but decided against the profession because he felt he had no calling for it. He was caught up in the 1930s Depression like thousands of his fellow artists and worked in WPA producing several murals. Following that he got a stake together and bummed about the country in a jalopy for a year, looking at the land and the people in the land during those very rough years in our history. He spent six months in an ancient house in Texas, painting, writing, doing a great deal of reading and thinking about what was going on, both in his own head and in the world. He returned to Cleveland and was taken on by the Treasury Art Project, producing easel paintings until 1942. At that time Campbell married and left for Los Angeles. Up until his departure from Cleveland, Campbell had established himself locally as an outstanding young painter, winning many prizes and awards. His early work was exhibited in the traveling shows in most of the major museums of the country. The Cleveland Museum and Whitney Museum own examples of his work of that period. After his move to Los Angeles, Campbell dropped out of the museum circuit and thereafter exhibited only in private galleries surviving wholly on the sale of his work. In 1952 the Campbells moved to the French Quarter in New Orleans...

  • Guy Pene du Bois WPA American Modernism Realism NYC Scene Oil Lawyers in Court
    By Guy Pène Du Bois
    Located in New York, NY
Guy Pene du Bois' "Two Figures in Courtroom" is a WPA era American scene oil painting created in a realistic style. Modernism at its best The work is framed by Heydenryk. Pène du Bois descended from French immigrants who settled in Louisiana in 1738 and was raised in a Creole household. He was born in 1884 in Brooklyn, NY and first studied with William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art and later continued his training with Robert Henri. Pène du Bois was greatly impressed with Henri's credo that "real life" was subject matter for art and throughout his life a realist philosophy informed his art as well as his parallel career, art criticism. In 1905, Pène du Bois made his first visit to Paris where he painted scenes of fashionable people in cafes rendered in the dark tonalities and impasto associated with the Ashcan School. By 1920, he had achieved his mature style, which was characterized by stylized, rounded, almost sculptural figures painted with invisible brushstrokes. The subjects of his paintings were often members of society whom he gently satirized. In 1924, Pène du Bois and his wife, Floy, left for France where they would remain until 1930. Returning to America showcases pictures the artist produced after this very productive period abroad. After five years of living in France, Pène du Bois was able to observe American life with fresh eyes. His work becomes more psychologically intense and less satirical. In Girl at Table a slender, blond is shown gazing at a small statue that she holds at arm's distance. The meaning is elusive, but a powerful sense of longing is evoked. Similarly, paintings such as Dramatic Moment and Jane are taut with unresolved dialogue. Both pictures depict mysterious interiors in which a lone woman anxiously awaits the denouement of a suspenseful scene. Other pictures, for example, Chess Tables, Washington Square and Bar, New Orleans, recall Pene du Bois's Ashcan origins in their depiction of urban entertainment. During this period, landscape becomes an important subject for Pène du Bois. Girl Sketching...

  • Girl on a Rock with Mask , Florence, Italy
    Located in Hudson, NY
Oil on Canvas , Made in Florence, Italy Daylight explores a playful world where dreams and reality meld together to create surreal moments. When engaging with Piussi's work, we enter an arena where we are immersed in childlike delight. We experience snapshot images of a world reduced to its essence, in a seemingly comic-book style that has echoes of Giotto and Paolo Uccello, and even of medieval illuminations. My work is simple: the subject matter is stripped to basics, so all that is engagement, controversy and links to reality is taken away, and what remains is an icon with an aura of philosophical suspension, and a window into the enigma of existence. Piussi’s work is directly influenced by artists Alex Katz and David Hockney, and his style reflects a comprehensive understanding of the work of Giotto and Paolo Uccello. In "Girl on a Rock with Mask”, the figure represented in this painting conveys a blank mood, such that the viewer is invited to examine their own intimate feelings that arise when observing the image. Piussi creates a universe of more profound truths in his examination of the tranquility of everyday life: he reminds us of our need for reflection, shows us a fearlessness in the face of stillness and the passage of time. The broad repertoire of his paintings, with their naturalistic color and semi-abstract shapes, presents us with Piussi’s views concerning our contemporary lives. Rather than mimic the appearance of nature, Piussi reaches for its essence, in visions that are devoid of distracting details. Women stand on the shores of quintessentially peaceful seas; they are self-contained, at ease. These women are unwitting replicas of classical goddesses. Or we see a proud diver echoing Neptune, holding his trident. Piussi was born in 1967 in Udine and raised in Florence, where he majored in sculpture at the Institute D’Arte. He completed his artistic education at Milano's Brera Art Academy where he majored in painting. Piussi went on to live in Florence, where he now pursues his passion for painting, bronze, terracotta sculpture and bas-reliefs. Giacomo Piussi...
