About

This is a fine mid-19th century Pre-Raphaelite oil painting depicting ‘A Country Lass’ be the eminent British artist Frederick Smallfield ARWS (1829-1915). The painting is signed by the artist with his monogram and hangs in its original Victorian giltwood swept frame. The painting comes directly from the private collection of the eminent picture conservator Simon Gillespie (as seen on BBC Television’s ‘Fake or Fortune’ and ‘Britain’s Lost Masterpiece’s’). As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in very good condition having just been cleaned and re-varnished. Frederick Smallfield was a painter of genre or subject pictures in oil and watercolour. He was a student at the Royal Academy Schools in the late 1840s with the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and by the late 1850s his works displays a distinct Pre-Raphaelite influence. John Ruskin praised Smallfield's watercolours in his ‘Academy Notes’ of 1858 and the artist continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until the late 1870s. He was elected Associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1860. Works by Frederick Smallfield are held in the collections of the Manchester City Galleries and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
