About

'Blind Man's Bluff', Large Early 20th Century Italian Oil Painting by Emilio Vasarri Italian, c. 1900 Frame: Height 102cm, width 157cm Canvas: Height 75cm, width 132cm This charming oil painting depicts a group of figures playing blind man's bluff, a game where one person is blindfolded and attempts to touch other players without being able to see them. Here, we see ten figures in the scene. The blindfolded man is stood on a marble fountain, reaching out his arms towards a laughing woman who resists capture by hiding behind the fountain spout, which is topped by a patinated bronze figural sculpture. Another woman teases the man behind him, tickling his leg with a peacock feather. The other figures in the scene are separated into two groups, a man and two women positioned to the left of the painting with a dog, and three women and a girl to the right in the background. One of the women holds a lyre while another plays horn-like instruments. The overall scene is characteristically Roman in style, with the figures depicted in an autumnal palatial setting. The figures wear clothes inspired by the fashions of Ancient Rome, and the architectural style of the painting's palatial setting is distinctly classicising, particularly the marble sculpted vases, mosaic floors and nude bronze sculpture. The colour palette of the painting is vibrant yet naturalistic, reminiscent of similar artists working in the Classical styles during this time. Most notably, this painting speaks to the works of Lawrence Alma-Tadema and John William Godward who were active around the same time as Vasarri, the artist of this piece. Emilio Vasarri (1862-1931) was an Italian painter who studied at the Florence Academy of Art. He was something of a child prodigy, exhibiting his works as young as 16 in Rome and Palermo. He became well-known for his classicising genre paintings like the present piece, going on to exhibit in Paris towards the late 19th Century. His paintings were meticulously researched, portraying historically and archaeologically accurate details of Roman life, particularly of Pompeii. The present work is a typical example of his charming style, and demonstrates his masterful skill. The canvas is signed 'Vasarri' to the bottom of the fountain plinth. It is held within an ornately carved giltwood frame.
