Dwight Eberly
Three Shadows, Figurative Abstract

1985

About the Item

Unique abstract expressionist oil painting of three dark shadowy figures by Dwight Eberly (American, 1925-2014). The figures stand in a warm, glowing light that is depicted in soft focus. Signed "Eberly '85" lower right. Framed. Image size: 38"H x 44"L. A California abstract expressionist artist and art educator. "I want my work to stimulate on an emotional level - not just a visual. I want the response to transcend the color and canvas or composition--something that has not been touched before but is waiting to be known, an affirmation and change." EDUCATION: 1960-1961 California State University, Sacramento - M.A. Degree 1954-1955 California State University, Sacramento - B.A. Degree 1948-1950 University of Southern California, Los Angeles 1946-1947 University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois ORGANIZATIONS: Mendocino County Arts Council 1993-1994 Gualala Arts - Board Member (4 years) Artists Guild of San Francisco - Participating Member Roseville Arts Center-Board Member; 1984-1988 Northern California Art Association, Sacramento, CA TEACHING EXPERIENCE: 1989 -1991 Oil Painting Instructor: Santa Rosa Jr. College at Gualala CA 1984-1988 Oil Painting Instructor: Roseville Art Center, Roseville, CA 1975 to present Demonstration Lectures and Workshops 1972-1975 Life Drawing Instructor: The Art Works, Fair Oaks, CA 1964-1970 Oil Painting Instructor: Sacramento Valley Academy of the Arts, Carmichael, CA 1959-1961 Art Instructor Folsom State Prison, Represa, CA 1955-1956 Teacher: Art, Crafts, Mechanical Drawing: La Sierra High School, San Juan Unified School District, Carmichael, CA His work is art of the permanent collection and included in the exhibition of "Lost and Found: Visions of the Davis Art Center ". In the fall of 2008, as the Davis Art Center began preparing for its 50th anniversary, a few curious board members began to research the history of a permanent collection dating back to the founding of the Davis Art Center in the 1960s. They quickly recognized that this collection, which had been hidden away for decades, was a veritable treasure trove of late 20th century Northern California art. It’s been 27 year since the permanent collection was last exhibited to the public. Lost and Found: Visions of the Davis Art Center brings these treasures to light. Between 1967 and 1992 the Davis Art Center assembled a collection of 148 artworks by 92 artists. Included in the collection are ceramics, paintings, drawings, lithographs, photographs, mixed media, woodblocks, and textiles. Many of the artists represented in the collection were on the cutting edge of their time and several have become legends of the art world.

However, his true passion lies in abstract expression, where he seeks to promote African art, culture, and nature. Influenced by his artist father, he paints to preserve memories and connect with broader societal concerns. Abiodun's artistic style is characterized by the abstraction and simplification of human compositions. He employs vibrant oil colors, often focusing on primary colors that transition into secondary and tertiary hues. His subjects stand out against neutral backgrounds, creating a harmonious balance in his paintings. A prominent feature in his works is the use of red, blue, and yellow tones, subtly blended to emphasize form and shape. His artistic journey includes training under renowned bead painting contemporary artist Jimoh Buraimoh...
