Angel Ramiro Sanchez
With My Eyes on Your Horizon

2017

About the Item

Artist Statement: This painting is the result of the situation my birth country Venezuela is in at the moment. A couple of months ago I started to feel very anxious about my country, the people and I felt so far away. I have painted the young country floating isolated and left alone. The figure looks anxious and holds the Venezuelan flag on her lap. She has no roof nor ground and in the middle of an abstract reality that feels like limbo. In any case, her eyes do not miss the light of hope and she rises above the politics that are threatening her. This is the image that I can paint as I am not there in Venezuela but instead I look at what is happening from far away. Angel Ramiro Sanchez was born in 1974 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. At age six was accepted with full scholarship into the Instituto the Niños Cantores del Zulia, school for musically gifted children. At age fourteen he began five years of apprenticeship with the realist painter, Abdon J. Romero, an eminent specialist in murals for churches and public buildings. In 1993, a study grant from Mgr. Gustavo Ocando Yamarte, Founder the Niños Cantores, enabled him to travel to Florence, Italy, where he studied at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1997. At the same time, he was enrolled at The Florence Academy of Art,founded by painter Daniel Graves, where he received a diploma in Painting. Ramiro was appointed senior painting instructor at The Florence Academy of Art in 1997, and is currently Director of the Advanced Painting Program. Ramiro paints only from life, searching for accuracy beyond physical appearance to reach the psychological state of his subject. He believes the painter must draw his information from "all five senses" to tell the complete human story. Ramiros work is predominantly represented by us in Sag Harbor, New York, but also Scriba Gallery, venice, Italy, Jack Meier Gallery, Houston, Tx. Ramiros works can be found in numerous private collections in Europe, The United States and South America. Public collections include: The Fondazione Stelline, Milan, Italy. The Fremantle Foundation for Foreing Artist in Tuscany at Villa Peyron, Florence, Italy and The Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA. USA. He shares his life and passion for art with his wife, the artist Melissa Franklin-Sanchez.

  • The Shadow Kiss - 2023, dark figurative oil painting by Daniela Astone
    By Daniela Astone
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Part of Daniela Astone's series of figures in different ethereal and surrealistic spaces. "The Kiss" brings to mind Gustav Klimt's famous 1908 painting of the same name but instead of an abstracted gold background, Astone creates a mysterious creature enveloping and suspending the figure in mid-air. The dark monster looks ominous until you notice the nude figure leaning into her partner, her hands lightly caressing or leaning on the the amorphous creature. Her body is relaxed and her eyes closed. As a classical artist who paints the nude figure everyday, Astone is masterful at depicting women at ease in their natural bodies rather than women self-conscious of their nudity—posing but fearful of exploitation at the same time—a theme in art history that continues today. Some of the sweeping strokes of black are inspired by Japanese paintings techniques, and on the lighter areas there are rain drop falling from a blue-grey cloud in the background. Artist Bio Daniela Astone was born in Pisa, Italy, in 1980 and raised in Porto Santo Stefano...

  • Strangled Planet
    By Kristy Gordon
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
A contemporary oil painting that resembles an early renaissance mural. Old masters throughout Art History come to mind, like Hieronymus Bosch, Jan Van Eyck, or Pieter Bruegel. Gordon depicts the "Strangled Planet" we live in: war, protests, and unrest abounds. At the same time, exploration, cooperation, and humanity persists. She uses European Medieval, Renaissance, and Neoclassical references around the main contemporary action. This is perhaps a reference to the uncertainty that is inherent in life—hardships as well as victories have always been depicted in grand compositions. The skeletons that climb, cling, and swing on either side of the painting are the reminders of this finite life. Artist Bio Kristy Gordon’s work is a frank and intimate reflection of her curiosity about other people, transformations and self-discovery. Her paintings hang in over 500 public and private collections worldwide including the Government of Ontario Art Collection. She has been a full-time, professional painter since 2004, exhibiting her work internationally and earning numerous awards including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (2010, 2013), an Exceptional Merit Award from the Portrait Society of America (2014), and was a finalist for the 2013 Kingston Prize for Canadian portraiture. She has been widely featured in numerous magazines, art publications, radio and television shows, including International Artist, Fine Art Connoisseur, The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art and Bravo!’s Star Portraits. Gordon has seven years of experience teaching and conducting painting workshops throughout North America. She has taught at numerous academies and schools including The Academy of Realist Art Ottawa, The Lake Country Art House, and The Okanagan School of Arts in Penticton and has also substitute taught at the New York Academy of Art. She has lectured at China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, New Century Artists in New York City and the Art of the Portrait in Washington, DC. She received her MFA degree in Painting from the New York Academy of Art and holds a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design. Additionally, she has studied classical drawing and painting at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto and Andreeva Portrait Academy in Santa Fe. She has also studied privately with artists including Yuqi Wang, Odd Nerdrum, Juan Martinez, Jeremy Lipking. Gordon is represented by Dacia Gallery in New York, Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor and Cube Gallery...
