About
Port View with Tower is a superb original oil painting on canvas, realized at the turn of the century by Adriaen van Der Cabel (Rijswijk, 1630 - Lion, 1705).
On the background, there are off some ships that have hoisted French flags. The onlookers crowd on the pier to observe them. Clouds or black smoke hangs over the clear sky.
The talented Dutch landscapist portrayed a port view, with an incredible freshness of touch.
Including an original 19th century frame in wood and gilded stucco.
Provenance:
Rome, L'Antonina S.r.l. Art Gallery. Sales House (Piazza di Spagna, 93), 18 February 1931, Lot.60 (as "Flemish School, 17th century"). Purchased by the "Conte (...)" as per the old auction label on the back.
Adriaen van der Cabel or Ary van der Touw (1631 – 16 June 1705)
The Dutch Golden Age landscapist was active in France and Italy.
Born and grew up in the small town of Rijswijk, near The Hague, Cabel, also known as Ary, was a student of Jan van Goyen. His real name was van der Touw (English: "of String"), but that wasn't grand enough according to Van Goyen, so he changed it to mean "of Cable". Surely he lived and spent the rest of his life in Lyon when Johannes Glauber made his grand tour. Cabel too moved to the French city of Lyon as a young man searching the truth and the inspiration.
His work is sometimes confused with that of his brother Engel van der Cabel (1641-after 1695), also known as Ange or Angelo. Engel accompanied his brother on his travels and they both married on the same day.
