Silver Lining VI
Located in Fairfield, CT
Karen has always been interested through readings and travel in ancient cultures and their customs, dance, music, poetry, and visual arts and other forms of creative expression. Her travels took her to American Indian sites in many areas of the United States, the Mayan ruins in Central America, Cambodia, Greece, Egypt, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Turkey, the British Isles, the Caribbean, and Canada. Using these travels as an impetus for further exploration as she became more fascinated with each culture that she studied, the influences and mark making techniques of the cultures were absorbed into her psyche and in her artwork. She decided to focus on these ideas and finished an MFA degree in painting at Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. In this program, she studied with N.Y. artist, Susan Wilmarth Rabineau, wife of the deceased minimalist sculptor, Christopher Wilmarth...

'"Composition with Polka Dot Mug, Silver Russian Cup, and Lemons"
Located in Wellesley, MA
Olga Antonova’s subject is compositions of extraordinarily elegant, beautiful and whimsical cups, plates, teapots, vases and dishes, but there is something playful about these paintings. Stacked teacups are also amusing, having a kind of jaunty and upbeat personality of their own. Polka dots are as endearing to adults as to children, and everyone responds to the bling and sparkle of gold and silver while marveling at Antonova’s seemingly effortless ability to paint these radiant details. This composition of rich patterns and intricate formal detail is the perfect complement to the more minimal shapes and brilliant yellow of the lemons, and Antonova's compositions are a wonderful twist on the classic traditions of still life painting. This work is unframed. Antonova's paintings can be installed individually, they also work extremely well in groupings as part of a series. Commissions incorporating one’s own personal collection of family heirlooms is also an option. Olga Antonova "Composition with White/Polka Dot Mug, Silver Russian Cup...

"Slow Rise, " Oil Painting
Located in Denver, CO
Eric G. Thompson's "Slow Rise" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a red clay teacup steaming with warmth with a cast shadow on the silver background. About the Artist: Eric G. Thompson captures stillness. He captures moments. Whether he is painting in oil, egg tempera or watercolor, he is seeking to evoke a haunting memory, a lost feeling. In a fast-paced world of deadlines, obligations and busyness, Eric invites you into the peace that he has enveloped within this momentary glimpse in time. Believing that we all seek silence, without even realizing it, he implores you to dwell on something you otherwise would have overlooked, or have long-forgotten. Literally and figuratively, he sheds light into the attics of our lives, even if it is just to awaken a feeling buried deep within the viewer. A major influence on Eric’s work is the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, an appreciation of imperfection, age and patina, often referred to as “flawed beauty.” Balance and light are also key elements found in every painting he creates. Like the characters of the objects, figures and houses Eric paints, his technique has been refined through life experience. He is completely self-taught, and believes this process has led him to find a unique voice and vision, through perseverance, trial and error. A painter since 1989, Eric now resides in Salt Lake City, Utah and has been selling his work professionally since 2002. He paints from his travels and the treasures discovered along the way, and he chooses his medium based on the mood he wishes to convey. Eric will continue to paint, evoking our memories, shedding light on the beauty and solitude of ordinary moments once forgotten, now glorified before us in fluid brushstrokes. Eric seeks to find greatness in the most humble of subject matter, illustrated by Elbert...

ARC OVERLAND
Located in New York, NY
ARC OVERLAND 40" x 60", $12,000. Oils on Silver leaf Frame option is available. About the Series: For Dray, Philosophy deals in the abstract and abstraction is an indispensable tool in art and culture. Through his paintings, he reasserts that abstraction has been a part of humanity, all cultures in all ages. It’s an indispensable tool, as we create symbols, vessels to fill with allusions and messages. The resulting artwork have a strong sense of purpose. Each painting contains hundreds of hand coloured trapezoid shapes, hand drawn with a sharp blade onto silver or gold leaf. Each coloured shape can be interpreted to represent an ‘atomic’ element. On its own a block of colour is insignificant but seen as part of a whole it becomes dynamic and alive reflecting on how nature works. The phenomena of light is also important to the work. The light of the sun in a room illuminates and reflects off the paintings as they come alive and change through time. About the Artist: Benjamin Dray...

"Selling Hope" Oil on Paper painting 30" x 39" inch by Patricio Gonzalez
Located in Culver City, CA
"Selling Hope" Oil on Paper painting 30" x 39" inch by Patricio Gonzalez From "Looking for Happiness" series LOOKING FOR HAPPINESS Like "el dorado", a cultural construction, a myth, the Looking for happiness series talks about the illusion of happiness. Using coordinates between different geographical points and world views, seeking to generate a dialogue between stories. In this way, places speak to tell us about degraded utopias, religious crusades, martyrs and oppressors, wars, victories, and defeats. All searches for what cannot be found. The infinite existing possibilities, in this continuous present and its accumulation, to be history. The utopian idea of achieving completeness or completeness. The transformation of the fabric into jewelry, the transmutation that moves from the sacred to the economic. The "object of desire" is the engine of life and its different permutations. Curriculum vitae Born on February 14, 1974, Santiago, Chile. Study at the School of Fine Arts of t he University of Chile and the University Complutense Hotels guest, Spain. He also attended workshops in painting, drawing and engraving the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. Work in the study of Guillermo Muñoz Vera, Madrid. "Night Sky Petunia" Contemporary Layered Mixed Media Floral Painting on Canvas
Located in New York, NY
This painting by Antoinette is a stylish and luxurious mixed media on canvas piece depicting abstract floral shapes with bold use of color and contrast. The Silver Leaf background allows for the luminosity to shine through effortlessly, as the lines and intricate details of the silk paper laid over paint and mixed media add a most interesting texture. The artist's hand embellishes with free fall paint dripping to add elegant accents. This painting comes housed in a black oak floater frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 31.5 x 31.5 inches Frame measures 33 x 33 inches Antoinette Ferwerda is a renowned Australian artist largely recognized for producing a bold collection of fine artwork that joyfully explores the geometry of shape and the changing light from dusk to dawn. Championing her love for shape, reflection, and nature using a diverse pallet of mixed media to portray her abstract interpretations of nature. Antoinette's diverse past and a childhood that was somewhat nomadic has inspired much of her work today. Antoinette’s backstory reads like something out of an adventure series, having spent her early days living in remote pockets of Papua New Guinea, where she was lucky to spend time in a seaside shack on Ela Beach in Port Moresby, as well as the volcanic town of Rabaul, the Cargo Port Lae, before moving on to Darwin where her Dad worked for the Red Cross and helped with the re-build process after Cyclone Tracy. This was followed by a family stint in Europe, visiting Netherlands, London, Belgium, France, Italy, and Switzerland, before finally settling back in Melbourne for her formative years. Her love for nature and exploring the patterns and relationships she finds within started early. “I’ve been forever fascinated with color and the magical interplay of light”. “Blessed to have a teacher Mum who fostered regular creative time during our nomadic stint, my childhood was largely spent creating, especially outdoors”. Never without a pen, sketchbook or scraps of paper, her natural ability to create in layers instinctively started in these early years. Although her work continues to evolve, she consistently creates works that are rich in layers, resulting in pieces that are optimistic, luminous and full of stories from her colorful life. Her signature work is abundant with color and texture, resulting in a transparent quality of her works. Adaptable to any palette, Antoinette has produced works from a diversity of spectrums and mediums – sun-soaked, muted and ethereal, vibrant, as well as monochromatic with accents of gold. Her themes include abstract and metaphysical interpretations of fossicking in rock pools, exploring the rolling hills of the countryside both here and abroad, the rock formations of the Australian outback and the magical light of a European summer to name just a few. Her dream and longing to become an artist became a reality after starting her own family and farewelling a corporate life in the pharmaceutical industry, with her debut solo exhibition in 2014. Six years on, Antoinette has fast become a firm favorite amongst interior designers, stylists and home decorators alike, having been represented by fenton...

Claire - Original Large Scale Silver Sally K Artwork

As your gaze lingers on one of Sally K’s paintings, you notice how Sally’s brush strokes add playfulness and life to the canvas, incorporating unexpected images and shapes of flowers, or abstract color combinations to convey the vibrant beauty of a woman’s hair. Sally then attended high school and college in Beirut, where she graduated with a BA in Fine Arts with distinction from the Lebanese American University of Beirut. Birches IX: Minimalist Landscape Painting of Birch Trees on Dark Silver
Located in Hudson, NY
Minimalist landscape painting of white Birch tree branches on a dark gradient silver surface Birches IX, painted by Frank Faulkner in 2012 36 x 30 inches Wire backing for secure installation Signed, verso The Birch Tree paintings are an elegant and sophisticated body of work painted by Frank Faulkner in 2010-2012. White birch branches are contrasted by a dark metallic surface that transitions from midnight blue to steel gray. The Birch Tree is the symbol of new beginnings, regeneration, hope, new dawns and the promise of what is to come. The tree carries ancient wisdom and yet appears forever young. An impasto, almost bead-like relief is created using acrylic paint and creates an interesting abstract juxtaposition with the representational foreground. The minimalist landscape is completed on canvas and is signed by the artist on the back. More about the artist: Born in Sumter, South Carolina in 1946, Frank Faulkner received his B.F.A. from the University of North Carolina in 1968, Phi Beta Kappa, and his M.F.A. from the same institution in 1972. Faulkner’s work quickly won him numerous grants and awards, including an individual artist grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1974. He was selected for the Whitney Biennial in 1975, which prompted him to settle in New York. There, he came to the attention of Dorothy Miller, Curator Emeritus of the Museum of Modern Art with a legendary eye for new talent. Since then, Faulkner has continued to garner acclaim and awards. He has been featured in dozens of one-person exhibitions (not to mention group exhibitions) in this country, as well as in Japan, Switzerland, and Germany. Faulkner’s work is owned by leading museums (the Smith College museum in Northampton, Massachusetts, for example, the National Museum of American Art and the Hirshhorn in Washington, D.C.) and by renowned collectors such as Nelson Rockefeller, Baron Leon Lambert, Phillip Hanes and Abba Eban...

Birches VI: Minimalist Landscape Painting of Birch Trees on Dark Silver
Located in Hudson, NY
Minimalist landscape painting of white Birch tree branches on a dark silver surface Birches VI, painted by Frank Faulkner in 2012 36" X 30" Acrylic on Canvas Wire backing for secure installation Signed, verso The Birch Tree paintings are an elegant and sophisticated body of work painted by Frank Faulkner in 2010-2012. White birch branches are contrasted by a dark ground that transitions from black to steel gray. The Birch Tree is the symbol of new beginnings, regeneration, hope, new dawns and the promise of what is to come. The tree carries ancient wisdom and yet appears forever young. An impasto relief is created using acrylic paint on wood panel, in an abstract, almost bead like design.

Shop Abstract, Landscape, Figurative and Still-Life Paintings

Painting is an art form that has spanned innumerable cultures, with artists using the medium to tell stories, explore and communicate ideas and express themselves. To bring abstract, landscape and still-life paintings into your home is to celebrate and share in the long tradition of this discipline.

When we look at paintings, particularly those that originated in the past, we learn about history, other cultures and countries of the world. Like every other work of art, paintings — whether they are contemporary creations or works that were made during the 19th century — can often help us clearly see and understand the world around us in a meaningful and interesting way.

Cave walls were the canvases for what were arguably the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict natural scenery through art. Portrait paintings and drawings, which, along with sculpture, were how someone’s appearance was recorded prior to the advent of photography, are at least as old as Ancient Egypt. In the Netherlands, landscapes were a major theme for painters as early as the 1500s. Later, artists in Greece, Rome and elsewhere created vast wall paintings to decorate stately homes, churches and tombs. Today, creating a wall of art is a wonderful way to enhance your space, showcase beautiful pieces and tie an interior design together.

No matter your preference, whether you favor Post-Impressionist paintings, animal paintings, Surrealism, Pop art or another movement or specific period, arranging art on a blank wall allows you to evoke emotions in a room while also showing off your tastes and interests. A symmetrical wall arrangement may comprise a grid of four to six pieces or, for an odd number of works, a horizontal row. Asymmetrical arrangements, which may be small clusters of art or large, salon-style gallery walls, have a more collected and eclectic feel. Download the 1stDibs app, which includes a handy “View on Wall” feature that allows you to see how a particular artwork will look on a particular wall, and read about how to arrange wall art. And if you’re searching for the perfect palette for your interior design project, what better place to turn than to the art world’s masters of color?

On 1stDibs, you’ll find an expansive collection of paintings and other fine art for your home or office. Browse abstract paintings, portrait paintings, paintings by popular artists and more today.
