Antique Dog Portrait of a Terrier "Sugar Nose" Carl Friedrich Deiker (German, 1836-1892) Circa 1870 Oil on wood panel Circa 12 1/2 x 11 1/12 ​Having mastered the feat of posing terriers with ​sugar cubes balanced carefully at the very tip of his sitter's noses, Deiker displayed the skill of an artist who deeply loved his subjects. Carl Friedrich Deiker specialized in depicting animal and hunting motifs. From 1864 until his death, he lived in Düsseldorf. His specialty was painting big game and wild boar and he was also skilled at the depictions of deer fights, fleeing big game – being pursued by the hunter - and the like. He also treated vultures and falcons, scenes from the life of foxes with excellent results. His painting, Sauhatz-Sow Hunt (1870), is in the Museum in Cologne. He has also supplied numerous drawings of hunting scenes for illustrated journals and hunting books. With his dramatic depictions of the hunt and his connection to the painting of the Rubens School, he is regarded as an important source of inspiration for the animal paintings of the Düsseldorf School. When his father moved to Rotterdam, the young Ludolf decided to learn art rather than shoemaking and became a pupil of Cornelis Saftleven. Later he studied under Anthony Palamedes in Delft and still later with Jan van Bijlert in Utrecht. In 1635 he travelled to France with Francis Bacon. Seven years later, in 1642, he returned to the Netherlands when he heard that his mother had fallen ill. He set up a shop in Rotterdam, and his earliest signed paintings date from that year. According to Houbraken, his travels had caused him to speak French so fluently, that his parents had to learn French in order to speak with him. Seymour was born in London. His father was an amateur artist and art dealer, whose other business dealings (as a banker, goldsmith, and diamond merchant) afforded young Seymour the leisure time to study art on his own, either his father's or the art at the Virtuosi Club of St. Luke - a gentleman's club his father belonged to, specializing in art. In a short time the boy was a self-taught artist, familiar with many of the prominent artists of the period. Seymour's love of art was matched only by his love of horses. He began spending time at racetracks early on, and before long found himself absorbed in the sport - drawing, painting, owning, breeding, and racing horses.
