John Ferneley Junior was born in 1815, at Melton Mowbray, the son of the sporting artist John E Ferneley (1782-1869) and his first wife Sarah. His brother Claude Lorraine Ferneley (1822-1892) and sister Sarah Ferneley (1811-1903) also became artists.
He lived with his family at Elgin Lodge, in Melton Mowbray and was taught art by his father who became a great influence on his work. John Ferneley Snr would take him on painting trips to London as well as Durham and York. By 1839, he had left Leicestershire and moved to Malton in North Yorkshire to set up on his own, in part prompted by the number of patrons in the area.
In addition to painting sporting scenes and horse portraits for wealthy landowners he also produced a series of paintings for the 7th (Princess Royal’s) Dragoon Guards and the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards. Later on, he moved to Hulme near Manchester where he married Rachel Strickland on 3 November 1846. After the death of his first wife, he married Mary Wilcox (nee Jones) a widow from Cheshire on 21 October 1856. Together they lived at 7 Barrack Street, Hulme where he was to remain for the rest of his life.
He died in Manchester on 10 September 1862 just two years after his father.
Examples of his paintings are held in public collections including the Leicestershire Museums Trust, National Trust, Tate, The Whitaker and York Army Museum.

The first depicts Highland sheep on a hillside with a Scottish loch below. The second painting shows Highland cattle grazing on cliffs overlooking the sea. At the time of these paintings, Gallon was living at 32 Alma Square in St John’s Wood and they were most likely painted during one of his excursions to the Highlands. Robert Gallon was a landscape painter born in Deptford, Kent in 1845 to the artist Robert Samuel Ennis Gallon (1807-1867) and his wife Cecilia Ann Russell. He lived with his family at Evelyn Place in Deptford. He was most likely tutored by his father; however, his subject matter was inspired by artists such as Benjamin Williams Leader and George Vicat Cole. Gallon began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1868 and in 1873 made his debut at Royal Academy from an address at 12, Tavistock Row, Covent Garden. He was a regular contributor to both galleries, continuing to exhibit at the RSBA until 1893 and at the RA until 1903. He also exhibited at some of the smaller establishments including the Hampstead Art Society, Mendoza Gallery and St James’s Gallery as well as at provincial galleries. - "A River Landscape with Wild Horses", Victorian original, oil on canvasBy John Frederick Herring JrLocated in Nutfield, SurreyThis is an original unique oil painting by the artist. Born into an artistic family in Doncaster, England during 1820. Best known for his equine art, of the same character as those of the elder Herring, including "The Home Farm," "The Homestead," "The Farm-Yard," etc.John F. Herring, Jr. was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire c.1820, to the well-known 19th-century artist John Frederick Herring, Sr. (1795-1865), who at the time, was considered one of England's great Sporting and Equestrian artists, patronized by the English aristocracy. The father's mastery of the brush, and popularity with the nobility, served his son, Herring, Jr., well. Early on, John, Jr. was exposed to fine painting and wealthy patrons. Recent reference books state that Herring, Sr.'s first child was named "John Frederick Herring, Jr." and was born on June 21, 1815. John Herring, Jr. developed a love for painting, a passion also shared by his brothers Charles and Benjamin. Three of the four brothers became artists, painting in the same style as their father, often collaborating on a single painting. In the years after 1836, Herring, Sr., feeling threatened by the teenage John Herring, Jr.'s ability and growing popularity, began incorporating the tag "SR" at the end of his signature. John Herring, Jr. continued painting in the tradition of his father, the sporting and animal pictures...Category
