  • Don't Forget Me by Amy Sullivan Contemporary Dog Painting with Dog
    By Amy Sullivan
    Located in Atlanta, GA
It only took us a second to fall in love with Amy Sullivan's abstracted barns and structures. Oozing with texture and media, her large-scale and slightly off-kilter renditions of the familiar shapes take on a whole new meaning that are simultaneously, as Amy says, "ever elusive and always familiar." Her beautiful tonal and abstracted landscapes are full of complexity that the layers of medium bring. Sullivan says, "My process is an intuitive exploration of simplicity. I am fascinated with negative spaces contradicted by positive mark-making." She likes to begin her paintings with a small study in oil and wax (which are as lovely as the finished pieces, we promise you!) And then, with her keen eye, she searches for the potential of intrigue and paradox. "Carving into the wax and paint, penetrating masses of space with sharp edges, I respond to the tension of defining space and object in an almost sensual way," she tells us. We especially appreciate the way Amy describes that fleeting moment when she knows a painting is complete: "Ever intrigued with the irony of painting, I wait for the voice that says ‘hurry, hurry'. When I'm finished, and I know that the work is complete, there is a feeling inside that says you're home...

  • No Bull by Bonnie B. Cooke Contemporary Oil on Canvas Animal Painting
    By Bonnie Beauchamp-Cooke
    Located in Atlanta, GA
Bonnie paints animals beautifully with their eyes showing such personality. She lives on a farm and is inspired by the horses and dogs that surround her. She layers oil and acrylic and other mediums to to create texture and depth on the canvas. This unframed painting is signed lower left. Bonnie works on large canvases prepped with several layers of just about anything she can get her hands on, including molding paste, dirt, paint and paper. Using her hands, she slathers acrylic and oil paint over the surface, creating the delicious texture that forms the foundation for her figurative paintings of horses, butterflies and figures. This lively artist is a self-called “true cowgirl” and when not painting in her studio, she is playing, riding and working the land with her beloved family, dogs and horses on her farm. We are especially taken by her equine series, which portray her own horses. Bonnie says: “I love to watch the horses and then paint them from a split-second moment in time that captures their power, personality, thoughts and intensity.” Bonnie has served as the official artist for the famed Atlanta Steeplechase. We also love Bonnie’s graphite drawings, which are a unique process. Working with heavy archival paper, she uses a special industrial graphite from China, normally used to cool heavy machinery. She applies this thick, glittery substance with her fingers then goes through the entire process again with a graphite pencil. The artist is also driven and motivated by her love of nature and her personal connection to God, which she shares with her viewers by including a cross in each painting. Sometimes the cross is hidden within the painting or sometimes it is a bold element from which the painting develops. Bonnie Beauchamp Cooke studied at the University of Georgia and The Atlanta College of Art, receiving her BFA from there in painting and drawing in 1991. She maintains a commitment to the arts community by serving on the board of The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (of which she is a founding member) and The Hambidge Center of North Georgia...
