Alexandre Gabriel Decamps (1803-1860) Hens and ducks in a poultry yard Signed DC on the lower left Oil on cardboard panel 27.5 x 40 cm Annotated on the back "Decamps salle n°5" (Room nr 5) with a wax stamp This could be an indication of the fact it had beeen exhibited in a Salon. On the back of the frame annotation "Donné par Decamps ......... 18?4" (see pictures) (Given by Decamps ....... 18?4) In a period frame : 42 x 55 cm, with an important lack of the gilding in the upper part (see pictures) Born in Paris to a family of Picardy origin, Decamps spent three years of his youth with his brothers in Arsy , where his father sent him to “learn rustic life,” according to the letter. autobiographical that the artist addresses, in 1854, to doctor Louis Véron . When his father died in 1816, he returned to Paris and entered the studio of Etienne Bouhot. He left in 1818 to study under the guidance of the painter Abel de Pujol , a supporter of academic doctrine. Left to himself, "without direction" or "theory", he leaves the master's studio disappointed and embarks on a career as an independent artist. Far from academicism, he finds his inspiration in the suburbs of Paris and the villages of the suburbs, in contact with popular circles and the picturesque of Parisian life. At the same time, he practiced at the Louvre studying the great Flemish and Dutch masters, having a particular admiration for Rembrandt , "the most extraordinary of painters" (Letter to Doctor Véron). Decamps made his debut as a genre painter: Chasseur dans les marais (1827), Les Janissaires (1827), marking an attraction for nature and oriental subjects. Anxious to perfect his art, he traveled to Switzerland and the south of France (1824). He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1827 with La Chasse aux vanneaux and Soldat de la garde du Vizir . In 1828, he was sent on a mission to Greece with the painter Louis Garneray. This experience will be decisive. During his stay, he takes notes, sketches and stores the images with which he will shape his return to his vision of the East , which has become a deep source of inspiration. At the Salon of 1831, he successfully exhibited seven paintings, including Cadji Bey ou la Patrouille turque. This highly noticed painting earned the author a second class medal, his first distinction. With Cavaliers turcs à l'abreuvoir and Les mendiants (Salon of 1833), then Corps de garde sur la route de Smyrne (Salon of 1834), he definitively established his reputation as "inventor of the Orient". In his first attempts, one could notice his predilection for the painting of the animals, in particular the dogs. He cultivated a no less passion for monkeys, assimilated to human characters, following a tradition inherited from Teniers and continued by Chardin . In the following years, it continued in the historical vein. Around 1853, his health deteriorated, he suffered from nervous disorders and his work suffered. Discouraged, he sold his Paris workshop (April 1853), auction off his unfinished works and retires in the south to Veyrier ( Lot-et-Garonne ). It was from there that in 1854 he addressed his famous letter to Dr Véron. He rebounded during the Universal Exhibition of 1855 where he presented a large retrospective of his work comprising fifty pieces; he received the medal of honor at the same time as Delacroix and Ingres, the most beautiful of consecrations. In the last years of his life, he undertook large canvases which remained partly unfinished. In 1857, he settled in Fontainebleau, his "country of affection", where he found an environment conducive to work His death occurs in Fontainebleau on August 22, 1860 after a fall from a horse during a hunting hunt. He was a Knight of the Legion of Honor
