BIO/STATEMENT - The Space Between Born in the south of France, Véronique Gambier started to paint at the age of 12 under the guidance of French Master Pierre Pallut, developing a strong sense of color and abstraction. She attended the College of Fine Art in Toulon and Luminy College of Fine Art in Marseille. Beginning at the age of 17, Gambier participated in several group shows in the south of France. Always drawn towards texture as well as color, she chose to pursue a career in fashion. This lead her to Paris, London and then New York. After working in fashion, then as a Graphic Designer, Gambier decided to devote her time to painting. Today Gambier is committed on a full-time basis to her artwork and exhibits in solo and group and exhibitions in the New York area. The Space Between is a body of work reflecting on complex interpersonal relationships. My process is connected to the intricate layers that form the foundation of long-lasting human connection; each step acting as a metaphor for the intermingling of individual personalities, shared events, and emotions that unfold over time. I also look to nature for inspiration in the development of these images. The paper-white ribbon across the image can be viewed as a horizon, and represents mystery in a relationship. This element acknowledges the aspects of a person we cannot fully know—the detachment even amongst mutual connection. After a process of repeated wetting, painting, and drying, I finish the image once the layers are integrated so fully that my brushstroke is almost seamless. This is also when a visual connection to nature forms. I think of the time just after sunset—once the sun is gone but the night has yet to take ownership of the landscape. Then, the landscape becomes a whole in its density and mystery: trees, grass, insects—each character unites to confront the night. This creates a supportive bond that allows for collective strength, a necessary rejuvenation that prepares all for the sun to rise again.
