About the Item

Stephen Farrell is a designer, painter, sound artist and Associate Professor at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His current paintings and soundscapes extend twenty-seven years of graphic storytelling in print, media and film and in typeface design. Stephen's font-inspired miscellany, 'The Volgare Project,' illuminated novel, 'VAS: An Opera in Flatland,' and animated film, 'TOC,' are celebrated examples of multimodality and the structural, thematic, dramatic, organizational and material possibilities uniquely latent in syntheses of forms. Stephen has shown work at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum and The National Design Center in New York, Institut d'Anglais Charles V and University of Paris, Athens Institute of Contemporary Art, The Perception Lab at SUNY and in many other venues around the world. "The 'Configuration' paintings emerged from a set of parameters in contrast to the other works in this show: 'be spontaneous and more intuitively situated; go solo, don't collaborate; simplify your tools; dump language; dump research; get out of the studio or library.' In sort, the paintings give me permission to leave deep knowledge fields, to leave physical comfort zones – the drafting table, the screen, the bookcase, the typeset page – to leave familiar pathways and configurations, and instead move in concise, mute, iterative gestures." "I began this series in 2010 painting outdoors – small, portable landscapes. Over time, long walks became scouting expeditions ending in revelries of paint. Through repeated visits to a location, say a harbor, the scene in front of me becomes an increasingly flexible pattern language, the act of painting a play of seeing and imagining, of pushing and pulling the extent to which I 'fictionalize' a landscape. Ironically, this series also serves as a reformulation of – and recommitment to – my interior life. I'm drawn to harbors, patios, outside cafes; outdoor settings which share aspects of enclosure. My Painting strategies, too, reflect interiority – an inward pull, folding up space, consolidating objects – strategies filtered through cubism and extending my own design logic and personality."
