2017

About the Item

Contemporary, hard edge abstract painting in red, grey, white and black Interlock #52 B, 2017 24 x 24 inches oil on wood panel Sides are painted so it's ready to hang as is This contemporary, abstract oil painting in graphic black, white, grey & red was completed by Vermont based artist, Paul Katz, in 2017. Studying line shape, and color, the artist contrasts & interlocks graphic patterns of vivid red, black, grey and white. Irregular puzzle-like shapes are outlined in black ink. Sand is mixed in with the oil paint to add an impasto, textured effect which also creates a sturdy, stiff surface. The artist's signature is located on the back along with the date & title. About the artist & work: Abstract painter, Paul Katz, reinterprets his signature canvases of interwoven black & white text into bold gridlocked patterns of gray scale tones and accents of vivid red. Working in a square format, Katz designs his compositions like abstract puzzles, molding misshapen forms together with pristine lines and graphic color. Paint is applied in determined strokes with a mixture of sand for a textured impasto effect. Not only is Katz a painter but he also has worked as a staff photographer for the Guggenheim Museum, an art lecturer, gallerist, and curatorial consultant. The artist, who now lives in rural Vermont, grew up in Manhattan and received his graduate degree in Art History from Hunter College.

  • Arrow (Abstract Expressionist Oil Painting in Light Blue, Paynes Grey & Green)
    By Jenny Nelson
    Located in Hudson, NY
Square, abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas in light blue, paynes grey, periwinkle blue and green against a pale grey background with accents of peach 'Arrow' by Jenny Nelson Oil on canvas, made in 2019 30 x 30 x 2 inches unframed sturdy wooden stretcher bars, signed on reverse wire and d-rings for easy installation This square abstract expressionist oil painting was painted by Woodstock, NY based artist, Jenny Nelson, in 2019. The colorful abstract composition is completed in an expressionist style with loose and gestural brushstrokes in calming tones of light blue, payne's grey, periwinkle and green. The contrasting patches of peach and dark blue beautifully pop against the subtle pale beige-grey background. Color is applied in light layers which is noticeable in the faint yet visible under tones of the painting. The square oil painting is unframed and has sturdy wooden stretchers. The artist's signature is located on the back of the painting. Artist Statement: My work has always been anchored in drawing. I spent years drawing and painting from life. This instilled a strong sense of space and structure. At some point I became more interested in the negative space surrounding the objects I was observing and modifying the objects themselves. I began to organically develop an abstract language, but the sense of structure and organization remained constant in the painting. I apply paint in layers using palette knives, brushes and oil sticks. I initially draw loose gestures and a variety of spontaneous marks. Often traces of previous layers remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways I could not have anticipated. This process leaves me feeling quite lost a lot of the time, and I have had to learn to become comfortable with that feeling. This sometimes builds to frustration, and I will scape off much of what was applied, but the result of doing this is often something wonderful that moves the painting forward. I view the painting process as a collaboration between myself and the materials. A conversation starts that has a beginning and an end, but everything in between is unpredictable. It seems at first some exciting things may show up but it’s important to disregard these first, too beautiful bursts, work over them, and develop something deeper from them. As the painting evolves, shapes and lines solidify, and I begin to see how the parts affect the whole. This way of layering, adding and subtracting, creates a history on the canvas. Shapes have a story to tell. Lines that have been obliterated and resurrected over and over again have an emotional charge. This process that started as a wild party ends up as a contemplative carefully edited composition, involving precise modifications, while hopefully leaving the life force in tact. • Fan Painting #1 (Contemporary, Minimalist Abstract Painting in Ivory Palette)
    By Christopher Engel
    Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract painting on curved canvas in a minimal ivory white palette oil on canvas on unique artist made stretcher 36 x 74 inches This curved canvas was painted by abstract artist Christopher Engel in 2006. The abstract expressionist style painting contains a subdued blend of cool white and ivory tones, with faded blue and green accents along the top edge. A sturdy wire spanning the back of the painting provides for instant, professional-quality hanging. Artist Statement: The Fan Shaped Paintings evolved from the process of mixing paint in paper coffee cups. As I noticed the intriguing arrangement and patterns of color and shapes in the mixing cups I began to set the cups aside to save those images. Years later, I began unfolding the stacks of cups I had saved to see the images and patterns of color. I was also attracted to the fan-like shape of the opened cups. The spontaneous nature of the color and shapes on my palette of “coffee cups” became the genesis of the creation of the Fan Paintings.
