2019

About the Item

Abstract gouache on paper drawing in an earth toned palette of green, beige, blue and maroon Created by Hudson Valley based artist, James O'Shea in 2019 11 x 14 inches, 16 x 20 inches in white frame Wire backing, ready to hang as is James O'Shea has been praised for years for his work as a colorist, producing layer upon layer of transparent color to create compositions that are architectural with organic gestural, strokes. This abstract gouache drawing on paper has a stunning palette, primarily in shades of green, beige, and blue with accents of maroon, peach, and periwinkle. The abstract drawing is complimented with a white frame and 8-ply white mat. There is wire on the back for quick hanging. About the artist: O'Shea's compositions of layered colors and shapes, seeming architectural and yet organic, are inspired by experiences near his studio on the Hudson River. The artist's interest in the energy surrounding nature's changing of seasons is clear as each color and shape come to represent a particular time of day or year. O’Shea finds revelation in observing the world while it’s deep in hibernation during the winter months. With foliage shed from the trees, therein lies nature’s defining qualities – branches that are finely etched against blue and gray winter skies, animals that are exposed to the elements, their tracks in the snow leaving proof of scurried movements. These characteristics of the land can only truly be known when it is cold and summer’s distractions are put to rest. James O'Shea was born in 1952 in Buffalo, New York. He lived in London from 1970 to 1975 where he attended the City and Guilds of London Art School studying with Eric Morby. He also attended Goldsmith's College and the University of London, where he majored in printmaking. Moving to New York in 1975, he spent 10 years life drawing and investigating color. He experiments in most media, and is now primarily interested in oils and encaustic paints. In 2004, he exhibited his work at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, Connecticut, in a one man show. In 2006 he exhibited at Paesaggio Fine Arts’ 100 Pearl Street Gallery in Hartford, Connecticut. O’Shea has also shown at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, and the Guildhall in London. His work is included in many private collections. Mr. O’Shea divides his time between New York City and the Hudson River Valley.

  • Untitled 1 (Graphic Abstract Painting on Paper in Peach, Red & Light Orange)
    By Jenny Kemp
    Located in Hudson, NY
Graphic abstract painting on paper in complementary shades of peach, light orange, and red with details of pale sage green "Untitled 1" by Jenny Kemp, painted in 2019 gouache on paper, unframed 15 x 11 inches Signed verso Jenny Kemp’s abstract paintings are inspired by the artist’s desire to represent unseen phenomenon. With intricate and calculated line-work, the artist builds parallel layers against opaque backgrounds, while shifts in color and shape call attention to organic forms that give reference to the human body or atomic structures. Precise lines seem to vibrate the transitions of color in shades of ruby and blush red complemented by amorphous forms in peach and light orange. Two circles of pale sage green contrast against the areas of red and orange. The drawing is currently unframed, measuring 15 x 11 inches. About the artist: Jenny Kemp received a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and an MFA in Painting from the University at Albany. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country, most recently at Gold/Scopophilia* in Montclair, NJ and the Mandeville Gallery at Union College in Schenectady, NY.
