About the Item

Jonas Maas (*1985, lives and works in Düsseldorf) graduated at the Düsseldorf Academy in 2014 in the class of Tomma Abts. In his œuvre he deals with the subject of "painting" as such. In case of the work “Untitled (M 104)”, that is part of a group of six similar works (each is a unique piece and not part of an edition), a MDF panel serves as the carrier for the image: a precisely constructed set of rhombuses executed in acrylic paint and ink. Contrary to many works in his œuvre, for which he deploys image-processing programs in order to develop the (digital) compositions that are then printed, here the composition goes back to an analogous experiment in the studio with barrier tape. The colors (and with them the abstract compositions of stringently recurring patterns) are rather brought onto the picture carrier in a very analogous way, partly with the brush, partly rolled. Through repetitions, color changes, replacements or shifts, which as such – i.e. through layering – also lead to the final color tone, brush strokes and structures that seem to have nothing to do with the upper surface shimmer through. So we can speak of a discrepancy between what we see at first glance and what we have to work out by looking more closely. Maas animates us to take a closer look, or invites us to do so. The two colors, red and yellow, are a strong, lively contrast. Fractured structures, that create the illusion that the picture is slightly bend, also create an impressive deep spatiality. Maas plays with the creation of levels in space, elevations and erratic refractions. The relation to each other of the individual panels of this group of paintings, on the other hand, encourages an analysis, and a comparative viewing. Which changes in color lead to which changes in spatial perception? What all the works have in common is that the panels have small "carriers" so that the image areas we see hang in front of the wall and thus reach into the room. So these are basically reliefs rather than pictures. In contrast to – for example – an artist like Frank Stella, who in earlier years insisted on making paintings and not objects ("... just enough depth to emphasize the surface. In other words, it makes it more like a painting and less like an object, by stressing the surface. ... I don't paint around the edge", in: Questions to Stella and Judd, Interview by Bruce Glaser, broadcasted in February 1964), Maas does paint around the edges of the picture. He is thus creating three-dimensional objects (abstract sculptures) through the form of the installation and the application of paint.

  • Covered Parts 2412 - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
    Located in Doetinchem, NL
Covered Parts 2412 is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. His reliefs are made by creating a unique single-use mould in which layers of jute-reinforced acrylic resin are meticulously shaped into three-dimensional forms, sometimes more geometric, sometimes more organic. The resin in this mint-greenish relief is filled with a pigmented sand, finished with a high-quality wax and nicely mounted in a bespoke beech veneered mdf frame which enables hanging in four different ways. Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He primarily makes three-dimensional reliefs that play with the tension between abstraction and representation, surface and space. Light, shadow and their elusive ever-changing properties play an important role. Although the resulting works are abstract, he uses everyday reality as a starting and/or reference point. His work is created through forms of manipulation, distortion, repetition and simplification. Some works arise from the repetition of a simple movement or form, others are made by exploring how far he can go with the deformation and manipulation of the material, after which he captures and preserves the shape. He experiences daily life as uncontrollable and at times confusing. In order to cope with that, he is always looking for patterns and has gradually developed various rituals and ways of control, hoping they can offer him certainty and reassurance. His work and person are inextricably connected. He makes the things he makes because he doesn’t have a choice. He is trying to get a grip...

  • Nocturnal Parts - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
    Located in Doetinchem, NL
Nocturnal Parts is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. It is a relief consisting of two open spherical parts with an intriguing matte black finish, perhaps a bit mysterious but very beautifully made. It can be hanged in two different ways, with the opening between the two spherical elements either facing away or facing the observer. Depending where the light comes from one might decide for the one or the other hanging method. Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands.
