David Kramer
"#Pleasantcats" Large Scale Conceptual Text Based, Abstract Painting

2019

About the Item

This conceptual text based painting by New York artist, David Kramer, incorporates gestural swatches of color over a controlled pastel striped ground. The bold text reads: "I AM COMPETING WITH KITTENS TO GET YOUR ATTENTION". Complete with glitter embedded in the paint, this is a striking commentary on our digitally driven culture of distraction. The social media memes of cats and kittens are ubiquitous and the artist uses humor to comment on our distracted views and overuse of digital communication and socialization. This bold statement painting incorporates satire with a contemporary abstract art composition. Fusing aspects of pop art, gestural abstraction and contemporary text based art, this large scale painting is an excellent statement piece. David Kramer incorporates influences from the 1970's lifestyle advertisements and distinctive interior design into paintings, drawings, and installations which are both nostalgic and ironic. His compositions resemble the advertisements that, as he claims (with the tongue-in-cheek humor that shapes his output), modeled his future: “I felt certain that my future would look a lot like what I was looking at in those ads. […] I am still hoping to grow up and get my hands on those things.” Text is central to Kramer’s work. He overlays what he calls “one-liners” onto his images, revealing the falsity of the idealized vision they present and the disillusionment of adulthood. In his latest body of work Kramer tackles inequity and disaffection using biting humor and satirical wit. “Tired Jokes” is anything but tired. While Kramer’s style may often borrow heavily from bygone eras, in this show Kramer turns the lens of his “Americana” onto America itself. Front Room first became involved with David Kramer in 2004, when we featured him in the exhibition “Sellout” at Voorkamer gallery in Lier, Belgium (which coincidentally means “Front Room in Dutch). He has exhibited internationally. His work is in the collection of the Pompidou Museum and Museum London, Ontario, and he has screened his videos and performed at the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Pompidou Museum, and many other institutions and galleries. His most recent collaboration with Celine was just released in this years Celine Hedi Slimane collection 2020 Celine menswear show.

  • Gestural Abstract Large Scale Painting, Vibrant Contemporary "Sapphire Bridge"
    By Debra Drexler
    Located in New York, NY
48"x72" signed on reverse by the artist. This is a contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Bright, nearly neon orange and pink fields of color are contrasted by an electric blue large path brushstroke. The composition and color are reminiscent of the coral, magenta and rose sunset against a blue body of water. Debra Drexler's paintings are informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific for close to three decades. In the 21st century, much of our experience is mediated through the screens of our devices. In contrast, the making and viewing of paintings remains a direct, engaging experience in Drexler's paintings. She aims to take us to a state of timelessness that is primal in its humanity, disconnecting us momentarily from the mediated “now” of our electronic devices, and connecting us to a “now” that gives us a glimpse of the infinite. As a colorist, Debra Drexler provokes unexpected color relationships and creates spatial contradictions that come from those interactions. Some of her color choices reference the post digital experience with its highly saturated synthetic color. The luminosity and saturation also mirror the unique quality of light and tropical color interactions in Hawai’i, where Drexler also lives. Her work is driven by an athletic painting...
