Daniel Klewer
'Papaya Powder Blue,' original acrylic painting signed by Daniel Klewer

2020

$2,600

About

This painting is a large-scale example of the paintings of Daniel Klewer, coming from his series 'Linear Tactility.' The paintings in this series share a consistent, linearly divided composition with investigations into the visual and psychological resonance of color relationships and texture. Color and texture dominate the paintings’ surface while also questioning the figure-ground relationship: The sculptural paint feels as if it is reaching off the canvas towards the viewer like the spines of a cactus. At the same time, the vibrant colors draw the viewer back to the paintings’ surface. The title of this painting, 'Papaya Powder Blue,' emphasizes the viewer's relationships to color, reminding of the colors of vibrant fruits and pastel powders. In this painting, Klewer has contained the colorful, sculptural image within a three-inch border of primed white canvas. This is a time-tested compositional strategy in modern and contemporary art: for example, it recalls the work of the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, whose radically abstract Suprematist composition 'Black Square' from 1915 depicts a simple black square within a white border - or perhaps a white square with a black square absence. Later in the twentieth century, pop artist David Hockney likewise made a series of figurative paintings of his life in Los Angeles, such as 'A Bigger Splash' from 1967, using a wide unpainted border to recall the physical composition of Polaroid photographs. Perhaps the best comparison, however, is to the Hard-Edge paintings of Agnes Martin, who often used such borders in her meticulous studies of geometry and color. 48 x 36 inches on 1.5 inch deep gallery canvas Signed in ink on reverse Unframed Daniel was born and raised in Milwaukee and majored in art at UWGB. He also earned a Master of Arts in visual studies degree from Cardinal Stritch University. He is now based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Klewer is best known for his painting process, which over the years has evolved into him nearly doing away with the brush and implementing a non-traditional paint application. Daniel’s love of oil and acrylic paint is evident in his treatment of his abstract paint surfaces. He enjoys a meditative, sequential process where the spontaneity of the material is allowed to influence the direction of the work. His oeuvre thus sits between the Hard-Edge abstraction of such artists as Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly and Martin and Carmen Herrera, and the gestural and spontaneous techniques of the Abstract Expressionists.
