About

Anabel Leiner (b. 1974) is a contemporary artist from Hamburg Germany. Her process deals with constantly experimenting with mixed media and colors to find her abstractions. Leiner's experimentation process is one that motivates and drives her to find new media, thus creating pieces that are ever changing and complex. Her artwork highlights the catalytic role of materiality and technique in the contemporary quest of abstraction. The result is refreshing with long lines contrasted with soft colors, balancing these features delicately and skillfully. Her use of color evokes elegance as her lines create an innovative touch. This painting measures 70 x 55 in A write up by Brian Chidester Art Creitic on this piece: "We critics always manage to find a standout at these fairs and it’s doubly nice when the artist is also a relative unknown. Enter Anabel Leiner. She is represented by the Lilac Gallery, an LES contemporary art dealer who devoted half its booth space at SCOPE to the German-born artist. The work by Leiner that caught my attention initially (and drew me in) was one titled Prozess II (2011), a six-foot tall canvas, deceptively simple, yet teaming with mystical overtones. Against a backdrop of turquoise blue-green are two diagonal grey beams which begin in the lower half of the canvas and converge at a single point in the top-half—the effect being something of a distant horizon line (and an homage to 16th century Renaissance perspective). Leiner reduces this to its simplest expression, however, finding complexity beyond the traditional narrative approach. From the top juts down an irregular, off-white triangle, within which bursts a spray of neon (or fuchsia) pink. The hard edges of the triangle, set against the bold turquoise background, allow the vibrancy of such splashes to lure the viewer into its potential freedom, which exists just beyond the wall. There is also an abstract expressionist motif that takes place between the two beams—a brief surge of blotchy pale strokes—which draws the eye away from the painting’s hard edges and further unfurls its subtle variations in color and mark-making. The cumulative effect is one of emotional content vying for recognition amidst the crushing towers that loom over existence" The feeling of Anabel's work comforts the viewer with rich color juxtaposed with aggressive darker tones. In a whirlwind of elements, we can feel specks of dust, drops of rain, rays of sunshine; taking you to a landscape bursting with sensations, emotions and most of all, the feeling of a thousand things happening in an instant. Leiner works best while painting on a large scale, drawn to line and texture against an ever-evolving backdrop, she strives to build familiar environments while playing with space and time. Through the use of mixed media and experimentation, Leiner achieves balance within each piece, while inviting the viewer to closer inspection. While stepping back a more distant view allows for an overall comprehension of these environments, encasing us with rich color against sharp lines fading in and out through texture and paint. With the use of Leiner's mixed media, a balance is sought between this overall view and density in these environments. Anabel's work makes us feel as if we can open a window and step into the landscape of her paintings, stealthily, so that no-one can hear us entering. The colors and geometric forms are the whirlwinds which are drawn to Leiner suddenly. They are a response to an internal chaos, and painting them is a way of shaking them off into a landscape of dreams, making these dreams a reality. Just as many writers write to heal themselves, Anabel uses paint to heal, and understand these bursts of emotions that can sometimes overcome within just instants. Every mood has its nuance, there are three components to assert to take room; with one another, against one another, or simply to make it on its own. That interaction is a process, which opens a space for creation. The paintings transform and emerge a new meaning, where a closer examination of the world comes to play. All of this simultaneousness is daily undergone. The artist sometimes feels as though to shut off the world and follow an internal silence in her own imagination. The center of her paintings become the brain and heart, understanding the depth with signals that echo what bares wrong and truth, and what slides away. Leiner draws enrichment from this and is inspired by words, music, and attractions, as she feels they kink a certain angle in her daily route which influences how she paints. Leiner is adorned with reduced impressions, minimalism, sound and thought spaces. She is at times conflicted with her own creations, ambivalent to how she must react once complete. As this somehow separates her and allows her special world to be frozen in a nanosecond. "I like to see art that is in motion, risky in a way -that plays with us, shakes me up, fools me- or brings me closer with an intense moment of cognition or disruption." –Anabel Leiner EXHIBITION HISTORY: SCOPE NEW YORK 2018.
