Cynara Shine: Abstract Citron Yellow Encaustic Painting on Panel with Thistles

2018

About the Item

Cynara Shine, 2018 Abstract Mixed Media Encaustic cynara and encaustic on panel 16 1/2" X 16" This modern abstract encaustic painting by Allyson Levy is made with assorted cynara encased in a brilliant yellow encaustic. The artist begins by finding the organic material in her 4-acre garden in upstate New York which she then arranges and embeds with encaustic on a wooden panel. The cynara clippings are laid in a spontaneous, organic abstract design on the panel and layered with a thick coat of encaustic wax. The encaustic wraps around to the sides of the panel, revealing some bumps and downward drips, accumulated during the natural drying process of the encaustic. The cynara creates a textured surface on top of the wooden panel. The piece weighs about 5 pounds and is hung on one d-ring. Cynara is a genus of thistle-like perennial plants in the sunflower family. They are native to the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, northwestern Africa, and the Canary Islands. The genus name comes from the Greek kynara, which means "artichoke". (Flora of North America) Artist Statement: Whereas art and life are mere imitations of each other, I can echo that sentiment loudly from my own forest. After relocating to rural upstate New York 17 years ago my life has become completely informed and inspired by my interaction with the plant kingdom. So much so that I became a commercial landscaper, grow a large amount of my own food, and started a botanical garden with my husband. Hortus Conclusus has become a class-1 Arboretum specializing in rare fruit plants from around the world. Our goal is for our gardens to be a “Living Textbook”. My art has also followed my life interests using plants as a wellspring for inspiration. My current body of work deals with the properties of found organic materials at various times of the year. It also deals with the processes those materials undergo through nature’s transitions: decomposition, sunlight, wind, insects, etc. By combining natural materials with wax I am trying to capture human-animal interaction with nature. The treatment of these organic materials along with various techniques of encaustic painting will convey the feeling of particular moments of time and how they reflect human emotions. From sprout to decay, the viewer is visually confronted with the profoundly beautiful, devastating, and inevitable cycle of life. My paintings are my attempt to portray, justify, and to find beauty and solace in these brief moments. Allyson Levy combines natural materials with wax in attempts to capture human-animal interaction with nature. Her botanical garden in Stone Ridge, NY offers a wellspring of inspiration for her work, which involves suspending carefully arranged seeds, insects and flora in clear beeswax. Her work communicates Levy’s augmented concern for the fate of the natural world, as the seeds are quite literally preserved by the wax for future generations.
