Jean Carlo Brutus
'Bossou (Horned Bull)' original steel drum relief with Voudou Lwa figures

1998

About the Item

This metal relief, by the artist Jean Carlo Brutus, features the figure in Haitian Voudou known as Bossou. Bossou is one of the Lwa – the pantheon of deities that intermediates between God and mankind and with whom priests and priestesses can establish close relationships – and he takes the form of a bull. Of the Lwa, he can be either helpful or dangerous: he is associated with lightning, fertility, and protection from harm, but those who wrong him can befall his wrath. Jean Carlo Brutus shows him here as a bull's head with two horns. On either side, figures stand above crosses and present him with offerings. Brutus is best known for hammered repoussé metal works like this, fashioned from recycled steel oil drums, which he started creating in 1994. Today his practice has expanded to include a large studio with numerous assistants and students, shipping artworks around the world. Signed "Brutus" on the arm of the right figure 17.5 x 34.5 inches

The seeming permanence of metal and stone used as compositional elements captures the essence of what I see, and I translate those elements and designs into sculptures. It starts with the stone. I use sandstone...
